Should women be paid as much as men?
When I was in school back in the 70's, the women's lib movement was at its most clamorous point, and was much more polarizing than it is today. Germaine Greer had just had one of her debates with William Buckley, and the following day, a political theory professor--probably the most radically liberal guy on campus--shocked us all by walking in and saying something to the effect of the following:
"I'm going to suggest to you that a woman will never be, and should not be, paid as much as a similarly qualified man, so long as she is capable of childbearing. The economics of capitalism don't support it." Agree? Disagree? |

Since the capitalist class has been immensely successful in maintaining the idea that childbearing and child rearing should be unpaid labor (even though it is a necessary component of reproducing the laboring classes) I don't think that childbearers and child rearers are likely to be paid for their work in the near future, be they male or female.

Is it just me, or have people been starting uninspired threads lately simply to get as rise out of other board members? Quite frankly, while I think this thread is pointless, but an expression of free speech none-the-less, I see this one getting blocked in the near future

Women, gays, and everyone else, should be paid the same if they perform the same job at the same level of productivity and proficiency. This cannot be done if you are at home "downloading" babies. Dads don't get paid when they are at home with the kids, why should moms? If you are not providing goods or services to someone, why should they be paying you?

Why is it that the average pregnant woman does not get paid, but surrogate mothers do?
If it's because surrogate mothers are not choosing to be pregnant for themselves, why doesn't the religious right argue that women who get pregnant by rape, who they think still should carry the baby to term, should be paid for it? Hmmmm... Does that argument also apply to abortion in general?? Does the conservative argument for abortion, combined with our views about surrogates being reimbursed for their work, mean that the state should offer to pay mothers considering an abortion to carry their baby to term? Why shouldn't women be paid to be pregnant? Commodify women's wombs and the problem of unequal pay might be solved? If a person can sell their arms, legs and brains to a factory for 8 hours a day, why can't they sell their wombs? Later edit: The more I think about this, the odder it seems. Men sell their strongest assests all the time and have been used for these assets throughout recorded history. Why have women not sold their strongest assets?? Or to put it another way, why have societies not allowed women to sell their most important commodities? The selling of their sexual power has been outlawed in many (if not most) societies and I have never heard of a single society in which women sell their reproductive capacity unless we consider marriage a form of economic exchange in which a women sells both her sexual power and reproductive capacity to a man. Is this fact solely a result of the overwhelming power of patriarachy in recorded history?
