I'd beg to differ. I have learned quite a bit because of the open forum, and even though some views have not changed, many have been developed with information I did not previously know.

jjl 11-25-2003 12:18 PM

Ok, I concede that some people may learn something some of the time. But there is no evidence that *anyone* has changed political/religious allegiances, is there? Even though so much hot air has been expended (expanded?) on these subjects.

Heck, we can't even agree what is a good beer. I *know* some of you bums drink bud, for example - the greatest country in the world, *and you drink bud*???

Cap'n Carageous 11-25-2003 12:23 PM

If I may get serious for a moment.........

This is one of the tamest (is that a word?) forums I've seen. I have seen and heard LOTS worse on some other forums. For example I have even been attacked on other forums for various reasons.................well, come to think of it that's happened on this one too! Never mind!;)

Anonymous 11-25-2003 12:24 PM

The analytics come out of the woodworks. Just because one has the ability to exaust a subject beyond the point of reality or practicality does not make one smarter than another, it simply makes one...analytical. Debating is good as we learn from this unless close minded or egocentric. Can't tell which with some of these people so the preference is to stay clear. Moreover, one views heated debate as personal attack wwhen in some cases the other is simply heated by subject matter. Then again, insults occur. Difficult to ascertain when only type-written words even with cons.

This is my first post since I started this thread, it may be time for morphing. You are absolutely right in attacking our famous beer that is mostly consumed by followers of the pack. It is panther piss, and has never been ahead of other beers like Pabst Blue Ribbon in taste test after taste test. In fact the reason Domestic beers are iced down is because they taste so bad, the cold kills the taste. That is not me speaking, but a known fact among beer experts. Most of the world drinks beer at celler temperature, and it is considered a food. I may get some criticism from the Bavarian tyoes here, but I have enjoyed the best beers in Belgium. That tiny country has around 400 breweries, and I think I sampled all their beers one night with some friends just outside of Antwerpin. I've got to back soon.

Peter

jjl 11-25-2003 12:51 PM

Peter - now you're talking. Some of the Belgian beers are terrific - you must have tried Hoegaarden - other are just too weird - some of the fruit beers, for example, names forgotten in alcoholic haze..

The Pacific North West seems pretty strong on good beer. I'm surprised the US doesn't export the better stuff, but I guess the Bud/Miller corporations strangle everyone else.

I agree wholeheartedly with your analysis of folk's economic priorities..never ceases to amaze me.

That Guy 11-25-2003 02:59 PM

Sorry Guys

But I just can't get enough of cold Bud Light.
Aaaah!

Makin myself thirsty just thinking about one. I used to be into the microbrews for about 2 years and then went back to old reliable and don't want to go back. I cherich the razzing that accompanies it too. I agree that most would call it crap, but its pure thirst quenching satisfaction to me.

I'm going to agree with Z. I think right now the US is very divided on where our country is going. Much of what is happening will force you into one way of thinking or the other. The war on terrorism, Iraq, the economy are all polarizing factors that we seem to be dealing with all at once. The stakes for all of us (regardless of opinion) are very high right now so we're likely to get pretty heated about things. I'm young, but I feel like right now is crucial point in our history and that the decisions we make today are very likely to determine our continued precedence in the world.

Was it a good thread (for you?)?

Three questions:

Where is TANK when you need him?

Was the "degenerate" referred to Ellen Degenerate?

What's it REALLY like in those "midwest areas"?

NO! FOUR questions...

Will you be able to marry your chickens in Canada (or the Commonwealth Of Mass.), eventually?

;)

What?!?!?!

The economy in the past 3 quarters has seen the greatest gains since the early 80s, two years after the Reagan tax cuts. Coincidence? Hardly.

A few months of dictator and terrorist-hunting hardly constitutes "perpetual war".

Not attacking the messenger, just the message. :p ;)

Pass the glass, please!:p

I don't understand such thinking AT ALL. No one is forced to read any post on the open forum that is too "crazy" for their delicate sensibilities.

If something bothers them, why can't they just not read it? Why leave completely? I just don't understand why people have to make it out to be such a dramatic, all-or-nothing issue.

Mike

rickg 11-25-2003 06:40 PM

Nothing dramatic about it. This person just quietly slipped away. Nothing wrong with that. I guess it got to where too many of the threads didn't agree with this person, so there it is. Heck, if I walk into a room, and too many people aren't "my type", I don't hang around either. Nothing about being too sensitive.
That "Too sensitive" thing gets thrown arround an aweful lot here, BTW. Gotta realize not everyone appreciates agressive assertiveness. They aren't too sensitive. It's just not their way, that's all.

Why expect people to change their core beliefs because of clever online arguments?

Deep, meaningful, important discussion/argument should strike people to the core. That's the point. Sharpen a carving knife with steel.

One of the many admirable attributes of your parliamentary system is when the PM faces Commons for a weekly grilling. I doubt more than a handful of our elected government could stand for questioning as have your PM's. Sure, a lot of BS and posturing goes on. But that to, is part of the political art of persuasion and leadership.

Its like a vivisection of government. It ain't pretty and few minds are changed. But we learn, if we choose to listen.

You've left me feeling invalidated and alone...

Have you forgotten so soon our perpetually glorious struggle in the "war against terrorism"? For shame.

Wanna bet? Where's that pinko messenger.....

rickg 11-25-2003 08:08 PM

Yeh, well put:D
But, heck, some people like that. No! Really!

kerry 11-25-2003 08:33 PM

Now I understand. Canada is a far more civilized place. I'm surprised that as many Canadians can stand hanging around as do. I suspect they look at us as living in a 'state of nature.'

Their canoeing boards are quite lively however.

rickg 11-25-2003 09:53 PM

Alright guys. I wasn't trying to get a Canada-bash fest going.:D
I don't think the atmoshpere of MBCanad had anything to do with what country it was in. That's just the way it was. We had people from all over the place, same as here. Just a different group.

Oh, forget it. This has excercise has fallen on deaf ears anyway. :p

The same way you decide which articles you want to read in a magazine -- by titles and quick content scans. If a subject doesn't interest you, move on. If most articles don't interest you, I guess you cancel your subscription...

Well, you have several choices:

1. Burn the publisher to the ground

2. Assasinate the author

3. Let your favorit wrappa's take care of the problem for you

4. Put the offending pages in the bottom of your bird cage

5. Rethink your position and agree with the author, envisioning a scenario where you actually become president of their fan clubs

6. Flame the publication and/or the author on the Internet

7. Cancel your subscription

8. Disagree with the idiot and move on
