yes, there needs to be a whiners forum.
get these turkeys off of the main board. i own a number of older benzes: 1986 560sel[254,000], 1987 560sec[84,000], 1979 450sel 6.9[50,000], 1995 e320cab[12,000], and a 1997 c500[22,000]. none of them have the problems that these folks report. some days i think that these turkeys are lexus plants. go whine somewhere else. get off this board. divest yourself of benz products. go buy your honda. go buy your toyota. but get off this board. i'm tired of your whining. |

fahrgewehr2- no plan for this car as of now, leaving it in the garage. Just got a new car. Probably will wait for while and then invest another two thousand to fix some of the things I mentioned that are not working now. Maybe use it as a weekend car or a image car when I walk down the red carpet.
Even if I plan to sell it in the future, I want to sell it in a working condition. Don't feel like letting whoever buys the car take the fall for it. Just so that I'll get a peace of mind when I sleep at night.

I have a 300SD (126 body) and a 380SL. I had Bimmers before and hated them....I did what some of you should. I sold them, let my membership in the BMWCCA lapse, and bought my first Benz. If you think that Lexus or Toyota or Honda is better then by all means sell your Benz and get out of this forum.
By the way, a mechanic friend of mine who works on high end "prestige" cars claims that Mercedes-Benz hasn't gotten worse, it's just that the rest of the pack has gotten better.

The intent of this post was not to be "for and against" Mercedes. But it has gone off hand.
To all those refering to whinners as such. All I can say without criticism there is no room for improvement. Although negative criticism is not very constructive, it does however point out a problem that needs to be addressed by MBUSA. More customers are being unsatified with this (let us all remember that) "product". I think MB made its best cars in the 80's and was far ahead in the industry than anyone else. Car makers brag now about features that were on MB 15 years ago. And some still don't have em till today. Those of you with the 15-20 year old car with 150K+.....justifying or arguing you point in this subject cannot understand the unhappy experience that "relatively" new owners (2-6 years, or 50-80K miles). Face it your cars were made with a different mind set than ours. Yours were made with the 200Kmiles in mind, whereas ours were made with maybe the 100K miles durability in mind. So please unless it is POSITIVE critisim you have ......really come on !!!! negativity is not getting you or us anywhere!!!! |

I still maintain that this forum is labelled "Technical information and support" not "Tell us how much you hate your car". Every marque has had problems, with the Japanese getting their share of the recalls. Remember the infamous GM diesel, or how about the Jaguar V12 that had more carburators than a fleet of Volkswagens, or the 350SDL Turbodiesel that Mercedes-Benz had problems with in the early 1990's. I will admit that my experience with new Mercedes has been limited to what my friends have said. There have been some problems, but overall they are satisfied with their purchases.....and by the way, if more people are dissatisfied than satisfied why does Mercedes-Benz continue to set sales records? The fact that the US government has kept the MB diesels from us is the only reason that I haven't bought a new one. When (if) the new CDI's hit our shores watch out......I'll be at the dealers showroom the next morning waiting for him to open up the doors!

NO car built within the last 15 years will last...
almost every pre '85 Mercedes was built on a "value added" basis...they cost a lot because a lot went into them, and they were expected NOT to wear out if properly cared for.
Today's Mercedes (and anything built since '85) is loaded with electronic stuff and other gizmos that give up the ghost with great regularity no matter how well the car is taken care of, and can only be replaced at GREAT expense with visits to the dealer. ALL cars today are basically just Hondas and Toyotas, built to a price, and expected to be used up and discarded like BIC lighters. You can pay 6 times what a new Accord costs for a Mercedes, Lexus, Cadillac, or other "premium" brand, but you won't be getting any more car. All have about an eight year life expectency...five before they start giving immense amounts of irritating trouble. In the past, a five year old "fine" car was just considered broken in...now it's just broken! I suggest you get a pre-'85 Mercedes diesel in as nice a shape as you can find...you will likely spend under $5k to purchase it, it will be easy to take care of, and will soldier on for another 20 years. |

There is not a better brand of automobiles in the world than Mercedes-Benz. I know that if I traded my 1995 E-Class for a 2004 E-Class, if I maintained it well it will last for 20 years. A high performance automobile requires more maintenance than the "appliance" brands. To own a Mercedes, you should appreciate the car, and be able to do some work on your own with it. It should get hours of cleaning, polishing, and shining, and in return it will give you years of enjoyment, reliablity, safety, and performance like no other brand.
If you are dissatisfied with MB, buy from Asia. Soon you will come to your senses and return to European cars.

I generally tend to think that MB produced some of the best cars from 1975-1995. There was always a big gap between Mb and any other manufacturer. Well, that gap has been closing in on MB for 2 decades now, and overall cars today are much better than they were. I still love MB, but i do feel they have not been ablt to raise the bar, instead every else is catching up.
Now with platform sharing, plant sharing, engines uses in different models etc.. no car is individual anymore. It is a derivative of something else. Q

To that I would have to say that he did not buy the car new and thus cannot be sure of the maintenance the car received. People who buy cars used run a certain risk. If I bought a new Mercedes, and did everything to it right, all service, etc, and the thing was still a piece of junk after the warranty expired, then I would be mad. I think some cars are engineered to last. I think MB is great, but would not own a C-Class. I could say the same for Land Rover. Land Rover is a great brand, the best manufacturer of any 4x4 in the world, and yet how do I explain the Freelander? It is the C-Class of Land Rover.
I agree with the fact that Mercedes is IN GENERAL not raising the bar. However, the new S-Class has 1 speed more in its auto tranny than any of the other premium brand manufacturers, including the LS 430. The G-Class remains in a class by itself, with the exception of Land Rover. It is engineered exceptionally well and will last longer than virtually every other SUV in the world. The S-Class also now offers 4Matic, something you cannot get in a Lexus LS. Right now, the E-Class seems to be resting on the laurels of the MB name, which is ok as long as it does not lag behind. Sheer class will attract buyers. However, breaking new ground is the E55. No other legal performance sedan is quicker. Finally, the new SLR. A supercar, perhaps, but I'm sure it will stack up well. However, the ML and the C Classes are a miserable failure. An "affordable Mercedes?" Who wants an affordable MB? Obviously, quality will be affected. The new (er) E-Class remains status quo to the last one. If the S improves (if not on styling) and the G remains an awesome vehicle, I'd say MB is doing ok. However, what they are doing with Chrysler is just wrong. Open the hood of your new DODGE Sprinter van to view the diesel engine, and there is the 3-pointed star right on the cover. Good for Dodge, BAD for Mercedes! Or how about the Crossfire, an SLK rebadged as a Chrysler? Talk about brand devaluation! For Land Rover, its just the opposite. The new Discovery, based on a modified EXPLORER!!! frame. It blows my mind. Land Rover loses, Ford wins. Platform sharing sucks.

I really hate to say this, because I am a pure German car fan and think JapANESE cars are, while reliable and such, uninspiring and most of the time downright ugly....but while we're on the whole MB/Lex subject...
Yesterday I flipped through the new issue of Car and Driver and turned to the "ultra-luxo sedan comparo". They were the BMW 7, MB S, Audi A8, Jag XK8, VW Phaeton and Lexus LS430. The MB got dead last and the [insert word of choice] Lexus got 1st. here's the internet article if anyone cares to read http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=15&article_id=7359
