Diesel and Gasoline Engine Oil

I looked today at the American Petrolium Institute (API) web site and I finally found out for certain the 'S' + 'C' designations on motor oil. According the the site:
'S' is for Service, and only applies to gasoline engines in cars, vans, and light trucks.
'C' is for Commercial and only applies to diesel engines in heavy-duty trucks.
The site is www.api.org - in the search feature type "motor oil guide shelf card"
I post this information to help clarify some of the questions I've had regarding the letters. I thought they stood for 'Spark' ignition + 'Compression' ignition, but, at least according to the API I was mistaken. Hve a great New Year!

Thanks for sharing that info. I've known about the C and S designations because I had read an old MB Club article by Frank King (I think) about oils (the ABC's of OIL) and I don't think many people know the history of engine oil. I was surprised at the amount of additives in regular oil.
