It's hard to back up a trailer and talk on a cell phone at the same time.

"A spokesperson for U-Haul said there's been a lot of accidents involving Ford Explorers towing U-Haul trailers. The spokesperson said safety isn't the problem. The concern is the lawsuits that follow. U-Haul says more money has been spent defending those than any other vehicle." -- from the article

I don't blame U-Haul for this. If they've found a pattern in lawsuits against them and know how to prevent them in the future, why not take the action they have? It's all about money in the end.

The Explorer has a GVW of 5400lbs, curb weight 4364lbs. This means it has a cargo capacity of roughly 1050lbs. Technically if you weighed 200lbs you could tow an 8000lb load. It must be the tires... yeah. That's it!

I still remember the last time we talked about that!

Like w126 and jhal said, it's not necessarily the vehicle. It could be that people who tend to buy Explorers are also morons when it comes to towing ... or more litigous. Probably a reflection of the fact that people who buy Explorers are yuppie-types with no motor skills. I'm with U-Haul on this.

Or that there are so many Ford Explorers out there that most of the law suits are subsequently from people who own Exlorers-- regardless of driving skills.

I'm glad they didn't include Rangers in the ban. I've rented U-Haul trailers several times with the Ranger, and never had a problem. Not sure about today, but in past years, the Explorer was build from a Ranger chassis.

Voice of experience

SWMBO used to have an Explorer Sport. The combination of short wheelbase, fast steering ratio and high COG made it of the most EVIL handling vehicles I've ever driven. I can't imagine towing anything with it...

Intrinsically unsafe IMHO.

Time for Explorer owners to do some badge engineering.
