Testing a battery charger

Hello!

Dumb question, but, if every 12 volt battery you've got on hand is fully charged, how can you best test a 12 volt battery charger?

My Scout unit acquired a permanent-mount battery charger, and I want to make sure it works before installing it...I tried hooking it up to 110v power, and wasn't getting any juice at the terminals. However, I'm thinking that the charger may not send power to the terminals unless a draw is detected. OTOH, the 110v connection may not have been very good.

Thanks!

Depends on how many volts/amp load your battery presents, you're gonna have to get a voltmeter and some resistors to put in series. I would guess this would run into the khoms. Better if you get a pot.

Battery charger

I ssume you are talking about a charger that is used in a boat when you say "Permanent Mount". Those usually have circuit that prevent over charging, the older ones were adjustable by a few volts the newer ones are not, A quick way to check would be to start your car a few times but do not let it run the charger should sense it and attempt to charge. A amp-meter in series with the posetive lead should show current flow, make shure it will handle the output of the charger. Or a volt meter across the battery should show a rise as the charger is plugged in.

Leave the lights on for a while and run down one of your batteries.
