New cell phone law :D
Got this in an email today. Hope ya'll get a good laugh!!
"I don't know if you've heard, but starting Jan 1, 2004 you will no longer be able to use a cell phone while driving unless you have a "hands free" adapter. I went to Circuit City and they wanted $50 for a headset with a boom microphone for my cell phone. Having a friend in the cell phone business, I talked with him and was able to come up with an alternative, working through Office Depot. These kits are compatible with any mobile phone and one size fits all. I paid $0.08 each because he bought in quantity. I'm selling them for only $1.00. I tried them out on Erickson, Motorola, Nokia phones and they worked perfectly. A photo is attached (or scroll down). Take a look and let me know if you want one. Also, forward this to anyone you know who may want one!" -- author unknown

I disagree...
...with the studies that say that cell phone use is dangerous. I can't imagine cell phone being more dangerous than playing with a car's navigation system or stereo.
Having said that, however, I have always installed hands-free kits in my cars. The antenna increases my phone range, the kit keeps re-charging the the phone's battery and the mike and speaker make it easier to carry on a conversation. The kits are not cheap, but in my opinion they make it easier to use the phone, so they are a worthwhile investment...

I'll have to brush up on the cell phone studies, but I read somewhere that the problem isn't so much having the hands tied up by the phone, it's that the brain has to divert its attention towards the phone conversation. How this is different from talking to a live passenger? ?
Anyhow, the pic was funny. |

Those laws are ridiculous.
The stated goal is to remove a dangerous "distraction" from the driver. It can't possibly have anything to do with the fact that there are so many BAD DRIVERS on the road, could it? We spend so much time and effort here in the US making sure people can actually DRIVE with some degree of skill before we turn them loose on the highways, after all! So, if distractions are the problem, then we'd better outlaw all of the following, immediately: Stereos of any kind, navigation systems, video screens with movies/games/e-mail/internet/etc., climate controls of any kind, CB-radios, two-way radios, drive-thru fast food, drive-thru banking/ATM transactions, drinking coffee or soft drinks in a moving vehicle (hot or cold liquid suddenly applied to the crotch is quite distracting!), applying makeup in a moving vehicle (what woman has not done this?), smoking in a moving vehicle (ever see a driver drop a lit cig in his lap and freak out?), talking to passengers in a moving vehicle (how is talking to someone on a phone so much more distracting than talking to someone who is IN your car?), children in a moving vehicle (BIG distraction!), pets in a moving vehicle (have you seen the old ladies who drive with their stupid fluffy poodles in their laps?), billboards of any kind (Hooters girls ever distract anyone?), accidents in the opposite lane (rubberneckers), police officers making traffic stops on the side of the road (rubberneckers again), changing a tire on the side of the road (rubberneckers, part III), and any attractive members of the opposite sex on the sidewalks (self-explanatory)! Stop and think about it. This cell-phone paranoia is ridiculous. There's only ONE thing that causes 99.9% of all accidents: The driver. Mike

Well said Mike. Some real driver training is what we need. Drivers ed in CT at least is a joke. 28 hours of class watching old video's and 6 hours driveing around town does not teach you how to drive.
