please educate me on saabs

my lady friend has a old 900 ( i think 80's) which is perfect but slips in either 1st of 2nd gear. so its undrivable. now she is asking me on what to do and she needs to fix it pretty soon. which would be the wises way to go about this?

would it be wise to swap for a new trans? and used trans? or just rebuilt it? what would be the most cost effective (cheapest)?

if it is only slipping in 1st gear is there a way to just fix that gear?

oh this is an automatic car. i need to give her advices. but i have no clue either. thanks

Have never had an auto but have owned about 5 of the old body style 900's and sold Saabs. The auto's were actually pretty good (slow as hell but no problem with the tranny) I would look for a used one as the cost of a rebuild would exceed the value of the car. THe cost of a used manual with install is about 1200 at the local saab shop here.

Can't fet rid of it

If you buy it plan on keeping it a long time because these cars a hard to sell..I knew a guy that had one and it took over a year to sell..it was a nice car, but no takers...

i just went over to drive it. and although she thinks she got a good deal on it ($2000) its not that great of a condition. the engine is decent, but it looks like it needs a lot of work done to it.

now the trans problem. i would start out and i could redline it in 1st. so i had to back off to about 2000 rpm for it to shift into 2nd. but while in 2nd or third if i do any hard accelerations it would go out of gear and back into 1st. so it looks like its slipping back in and out of 2nd.

i told her to try to change the transfluid and put additives. but she wants it done right. how much would a rebuilt cost? can she choose to only fix the 2nd gear? thanks a lot guys.
