How to get a replacement Social Security Card?

I know there are a lot of you out there with more experince then me so I figured I would ask. My Social Security card is done for and I'm not sure how to get a replacement. I know I can go to the social security office and request one but someone told me you can request them online. Anyone know if this is true?
Thanks

Dear Benzman500:

You have to go to a SSA office, fill out a form and present some papers showing your personal information before they would issue you a replacement SSN card.

This is the only way for them to prevent frauds from impersonating someone else.

My card still says," Not to be used for identification" yeah, right!
I get blank looks from young clerks when they ask for my SS# and I say, you can't use that for identification purposes.

I work with a guy who, as he was putting his card into the laminating machine, read where is says, "Do not laminate this card"

Asking for a SS card for ID is strictlty illegal.
We has instant call in backgroung checks in Oregon when buying a firearm, even when buying a handgun on the form you fill out that they use for the call in you put your drivers license number as ID it states SS number optional.I always put mine down as it speeds the process but it is strictly voluntary.

I would look up the wording of the law and give the next little snip hell that asks for it.

Radio Shack used to demand your name and address (so you were on their catalog list)when you made a purchase, after a few times I started refusing to give it to them and would stand there going back and forth with the clerk untill they called the manager,he would always renig.

We are slowly perhaps not so slowly giving up our rights in our country. My guess is that history will revel as it has in the Kennedy Assination that there is more than a good case to make that giving the goverment more and more power is not a cowincedense.........
