What are those numbers on the side of American cars

Remember seeing while I was in America a couple of years ago; what are the numbers on the side? It's like, 5 numbers in a row, and all sorts of cars seem to have them.

Security of some sort..? (Are they secure?)

It's a keyless entry system, you enter a code to unlock the car. Seems to be mostly seen on Ford products, I know GM had it for awhile on the pricier models.
I think it's pretty secure, I mean as far as something like that goes. If someone wants something out of your car they'll smash the window anyways, more of a convenience than anything else.

My Dad once had an 86 Nissan Maxima with the same keyless numerical keypad, so it's been around for awhile...and obviously not limited to American makes...

My friends 93 Maxima had it. It always seemed to be kind of a pointless option to me.

I always thought those numbers on the doors of American cars was the tow truck telephone number

How are things in Bristol.
My dad flew under the Clifton Suspension bridge just before he lost his pilots license.

I also used to do a few dealer swaps with MB Bristol before it became part of the Sytner Group.

I thought the original question was for those numbers with bar codes on rear door window dirver's side. I still do not know what they are, although as limeyb mentioned they could be for the tow truck with the yearly service plan?

so limeyb-

did your dad loose his licence as a consequence of flying under the bridge? And what particular craft did he do it in?

JUST... Not a big problem although a second set of hands would have helped, and got in the way.
