Is there a single thing on the "average" "American Chinese Food Place" menu that an actual Chinese person eats?

I do not think so!

When I was 18 and just graduated high school I went to the philipines for a month with my g.f. at the time. One night we were invited to an authentic chinese restaurant. We had what they called the emperor's meal. 12 courses along with repeats on various dishes. Well long story short, after that meal I could never eat "american" chinese food again.

yeah... growing up in the SF bay area, I learned to use chopsticks in kindergarten, and there are some amazing chinese restaurants there. Dim-sum is chinese, and there are about 3 or so good dim-sum places in san diego, and probably a dozen in the bay area. Also, to find some good chinese restaurants, look for a dense chinese population. You can't compare places like panda express (fast food joint here in SD) with chinese food though... it's like trying to call Taco Bell authentic mexican food.

Do you mean Japanese families don't gather for dinner around a Benihana chef?

Just my two cents,

I am a white guy who has a korean wife so I have my fair share of korean and asian food and I LOVE IT.

I have a simple rule when it comes to chinese resturants. If a white guy referred me there it often sucks. It is bland and watered down.

If you are the token white person in the resturant you are on your way.

I think that the same can be said for most ethnic food resturants. If you live in the country then maybe this rule is harder to follow but in sub urban to urban areas it should work. Also, if the resturant advertises on the radio it sucks.

As a rule, chinese food, if it is good, should taste good when cold.

There are going to be differences. The reasturants have to adapt to the local tastes. Buy Texmex in Texas and its NOT Mexican food. Mexican food tends to have very little spice and is fresh.

Chinese food.
I was on a layover in San Fransico on the edge of Chinatown. I asked the hotel staff for a good Chinese resturant. They sent me to a particular place up the street. While looking at the menu displayed in the window. I noticed a resturant up the street with the same name, but not one white person was entering or leaving. All the customers were Chinese. That is where I decided to go. Only one employee spoke english. I had him order me something. It was great.
When flying to Europe we would do the same thing. Find a local place and have the locals order for you. That way the food was good and sometimes surprized you. I will say we did this in the developed countries, Not the 3rd world nations we flew to. Had to be careful.
Airline crews usually have a saying. "Don't order a specialty more than 3 states away". Don't order a Philly Cheesesteak in Seattle. Don't order The Atomic hot wings in Toronto, There not very atomic compared to Texas atomic. Don't order fresh salmon in Kansas. It seems to work well while traveling.

me too, there's a chain of Asian supermarkets out in California called 99 Ranch Market, cheap and it satisfies. This thread reminds me of a LFO song... Chinese food makes me sick.... I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch...

Ranch 99 is the absolute best place to get fresh fish, or live crab/lobster/prawns. Every new years, my family gets 4 live crabs from there and we cook them at home in a huge pot. It's really messy, but tastes great!

And pizza is an American creation. Go to Italy and ask for a pizza and they will just scratch their heads and look at you funny! :p

not true!!! I've been to italy and malta, and they do have pizza, it's just much different from what we are used to. Instead of pepporoni and cheese, it has eggs, capers, onions, olives, etc.; not quite what you'd expect.

If you’re in LA try “Twin Dragon” on Pico, near Fairfax I think. It’s always seemed better to me – there’s always a lot of Asians there, some unique things on the menu, but I always wondered how truly authentic it was as it seems so different from most Chinese. Try the “Crispy Mongolian Beef” or the crunchy sweet prawns – I think they call them “Heavenly Prawns”
