S. T. Dupont
Can anyone tell me about this brand of eyeglass frames? My dad wants us to get him some S. T. Dupont eyeglass frames for his birthday but we can't find them anywhere. Opticians don't seem to carry them.
Are S. T. Dupont better than any other eeyeglass frames? What is the price range? |

DuPont was a french luggage maker from way back, and still is. Supposedly, they made (and still make) some of the finest luggage, attaches, and "briefcases" in the world, much of which is custom made to order. It has been, I think for nearly two centuries, a family run business. They have also branched out to fragrance and make two men's fragrances, one of which I use ("Signature") and think is quite nice.
Look around the internet or try to contact the company in France. They will likely be expensive, but you never know, the scents are reasonable and below "haute-designer" cost. They probably have a range of frames available but I bet they are really nice. I would compare the style factor of Dupont as something like a Patek Phillipe watch. Many don't know what it is. Those who do really appreciate it. Your dad must have discriminating taste. Last edited by Orkrist; 02-01-2004 at 02:48 AM. |

They're also a factor in high-end pens, especially the fountain variety, occasionally getting into four figures; they've got some beautiful pieces, none of which I've spent the money to own. It's a brand a little on the order of Louis Vuitton et al.
Thanks to the magic of Google, I found this link: http://www.coolframes.com/index.php?bid=24 Looks like Dad has good taste.

Thanks for the link which lead me to another place that was able to help. The frames with his prescription will cost slightly over $600 plus tax, but will split the cost so its not so bad.

rickg as I understand it, normal eyeglasses cost like $300 for good quality, so this is twice as much. The woman said the glasses are made in Switzerland although its a french company and that they were 23KT GP whatever that means. We got him the model D099 which isn't on that link but they faxed us the info
anyway martha stewart went to court carrying a $6000 purse so I guess its just what you want to spend . |

Yeah, I guess.
I just have a hard time with some of this kind of spending. I wouldn't even spend $300 on sunglasses. Maybe, just maybe, $100. I keep forgetting I'm hangin' with people here on the forum that probably pay more in yearly taxes than I make gross

RickG, you're also hangin' with folks who don't have eyes as good as yours! We're not talking about sunglasses here; we're dealing with the facial appliances necessary for those of us without 20-20 vision. In a decent frame from a good optometrist, it's not hard to hit $300; the SpecsRUs joints of the world can do it for less, but may work you up there anyway.
Welcome to the wonderful world of myopia, where sometimes things actually look better in soft focus.

Been wearing glasses since junior high, and the most I've ever paid for glasses was just over $200, my current pair. These are titanium frames, with the matching clip on sunglasses. Very well made, and halfway fashionable, so they told me anyway )
Ah well. Alot of my family and friends thought I was nuts for paying $5k for a 20 year old car with over 300K miles on it too. I guess it's just what's important to ya. But $600 for sunglasses :p

Reminds me of the book The Millionnaire Next Door...
Totally, or at least it reminds me of people who may not be millionaires but have good taste. I was talking with a friend of mine in the real estate business about the differences between the wannabe rich and famous and the really rich and not famous at all. The wannabes live in the expensive areas, big houses, BMW SUVs, the newest MBs, Porsches and so on, finance everything, are totally overextended but look fabulouos I guess. You know what really rich people drive? Buicks. At least in the midwest. I don't know why but its true. Anyway, its interesting food for thought. What are the odds of becoming a millionaire? In Missouri, every 1/335 people is one. That's a lot of people. |
