the Beatles (or i feel REALLY old)
all this talk about the 40th aniversary of the beatles on ed sullivan is making me feel REALLY old now.
although i was not really old enough to understand the hype, i distinctly remember watching their debut on that night (sunday?) also the stones and supremes, but none to as great effect as the hardest working man in show business: mr james brown, who i thought must have been dancing on ice with the way he moved his feet! FAR removed from the jed clampett shuffle all my hillbilly kin were doing. i recall with much greater detail the day i first held sgt peppers in my hands. i had a cousin that was 3or4 years older than me, that i thought was a "true" hippy, and was absolutely blown away by the record, and especially the artwork of the album covers. i thought i WAS on acid! pushing play on the CD sure is easy, but cueing up the old turntable sure was satisifying. staying up late to watch man step foot on another planet live in black and white also looms large in my memory banks. |

I didn't see the Ed sullivan show, but too remember all the Beatles hype. I remember laughing at the names of these bands too.
The Beatles The Rolling Stones Sheesh! Has it really been 40 years Paul, sometimes you scare me :p

I remember that night very well. A skinny eleven year with a crew cut supported by Butch Wax hair dressing, sitting cross-legged in front of Philco black and white tv tuned to the only channel we could receive. The whole family just waiting to see what these British lads were all about. I laughed at them. Rolled in the floor laughing at them. Look at those goofy guys with the long hair and the suits without collars! "I'll never look like those guys" I said. It was about their third appearance that I realized I really LIKED their music. Seeing the movie "Help!" in Atlanta convinced me that it couldn't hurt to look like them. Girls were crying all during the movie. Yep, a turning point in my life!!! I wanted to make girls cry too!!!
And yeah, it's been 40 years!! |

My older brother went and saw one of their movies, don't remember if it was Help, or A Hard Days Night. He said they had to stop the movie like 1 or 2 times warning the crowd that if they didn't stop screaming, they'd stop the movie altogether.
How silly!
