Bye Bye Windoze.

I HAVE JUST HAD IT WITH WINDOZE I'M NOT ANTI BILL GATES I'M ANTI CRASH, I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF C+++ ERRORS I AM MAKING TO FINAL MOVE TO LINUX.

Now that I got that off my chest is what is the current/best release for home/office use.

DuncanM 02-06-2004 01:46 PM

Since Redhat no longer offers support I would have to say Suse is IMHO the best.

IMO Mandrake 9.2 is EXCELLENT. I started using it a little over a year ago and my computer has never crashed. I usually leave my computer on for >100 hours too.

You have to realize it's a French distribution though... took me a little while to get over :D

Slackware is good over here. The installation is quick and easy, even though it doesn't have a fancy GUI.
Gentoo is also nice and has a super system for keeping things updated, but it's definitely harder to install. If you want a long-term solution, something that you can update quickly and easily from now on, I haven't seen anything touch Gentoo.
I'd also recommend FreeBSD 4.9, but it seems like some 3rd-party apps are harder to get working.
[edit -- i use all 3 here on a regular basis and find that Gentoo is my favorite.]

Mozilla, of course, works with all of the above. :) Then there's Sylpheed for e-mail, GIMP for graphics, OpenOffice for word processor / spreadsheet / presentation / etc, and ROX for a nice file manager.

I use OpenOffice on my G3. Its slow compared to Microsoft's version. But its reliable and I've had no probs transferring files. I like the spreadsheet more than Excel, which is PDG, except for stats functions. Does anybody know OpenOffice has the same built-in miserable statistical (mal)functions that fail to accurately compute in the Microsoft product?

Whenever I have to deal with Microsoft I think, "BOHICA".

I've been listening to the bell tolling for the demise of Windows for over a decade. I'll believe it when I see it.

Considering Linux is up to .51% market share the wait will be long.

Windoze will be around for a long long time, however there are better products out there.

Frankly, I'm just sick and tired of the ad's and virus's that target windoze, I like the OS but using it is like putting a target on your back.

So do you know how to break into your own box yet?

For a few of our windows computers at the lab, we didn't have to. Someone had already done it _for_ us. :D

I had ZoneAlarm on them, but that was disabled by some geniuses. Also, people were using Internet Exploder instead of Mozilla. Result? All had viruses and trojans, and one had moviez and gamez stashed in a D:\RECYCLER spot. This was just within the past week. !!

All of my own computers are windows-free and I even got 1 lab computer to dual boot, but there's nothing I can do about the other 3. That's it, I resign. If it's running windows, it's for someone else to deal with. Already, I've wasted far too much time.
