Question for blackmercedes, anyone from Canada

What's the deal with this, guys? Why the bigtime censorship with this case?

from Foxnews.com:

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The more Canadian police dig underneath a pig farm east of Vancouver, British Columbia (search), the more death they unearth.

Over the past two years, police have discovered the partial remains of 31 women, making it the country's worst serial killer case.

"This is supposedly the good and peaceable kingdom ... Canada," said criminologist/sociologist Bob Ratner. "It's getting increasingly difficult to think of Canada as some kind of sanctuary from those crimes."

Farm owner Robert Willy Pickton (search) faces 22 counts of murder so far. His alleged victims are all prostitutes from downtown Vancouver's east side.

The details of the murders are unbelievably gruesome. Police found human body parts in freezers used to store unsold meat. They also discovered remains in a wood chipper (search) — the victims' bodies turned into pig feed. But most Canadians don't know any of this horrifying evidence because the country's media has been barred from reporting it.

"Canadians are trying to protect the integrity of the criminal justice system, protect people's reputation against encroachment, against jury taint," said Mary Lynn Young, an assistant journalism professor at the University of British Columbia (search).

But experts warn that Canada's coverage ban has a dangerous flip side — shielding the public from the details of the case also protects the police from critical scrutiny and has the public wondering why it took so long for the women to be found.

Pickton is scheduled to appear in court in June and a trial date may be set at that time.

The appointed judges in Canada can nap during court and not get fired , muzzeling the media is done on every high profile case.

This is a giant Cluster-f...

We have had some cases where it has become nearly impossible to get a jury that has not been spoon fed nearly every detail of the case prior to the trial.

However, how do we balance this need for the justice system to function with the need for a free press? This is a tough one and most modern societies are grappling with similar issues right now. Take election reporting. It was easy in the past to control the release of results in an effort to keep voters from being baised by incoming voting tabulations. But, was this right? With the internet, do we continue to attempt it? Do we change the system altogether?

This will take some time to come to grips with, and then we'll have a new set of problems come up...

I guess censorship may be worse than unbridled publicity, but not by much.

Look at the disproportionate, sensation, prejudicial, and obnoxious media frenzies through which we frequently convulse in the USA. Mudered wives are really big. Child abductions are big, especially if the kid is pretty and white. Mass-murderers have mass appeal. Its as bad as pornography in that the scrutiny given these events dissipates the media from productive reporting and just wallows in salaciousness.

Wow "pornography" and "salaciousness" in one posting. I need a cigarette and a nap.

Just a note...

I used to work next door to the Farm after I graduated from high-school at an industrial cleaning company. My truck broke down and Willy Pickton gave me a ride back to the shop and I said "hey, thanks for the lift." It is really scary thinking about what happened there. The whole plot is dug up and even the house is gone. They had to re pave the street because of the new traffic it caused. It has been very hush-hush and I really don't know why. The whole thing is very Jeffrey Dahmer like. If he is convicted, he will probably get to bunk with Clifford Olsen and watch DVD's, eat pizza as well as go on the net. Clifford brutally murdered 14 - 17 children in the early 80's and is in solitary. In Washington, the Green River Killer has been caught and tried. If Willy Pickton is guilty, another long list of family and friends can hopefully find peace.

Shaun
