I ask because it's best to give consumable items as gifts unless your loved one will be forever cherished in your lifetime.

You don't want an ex-lover still possessing memories of you like jewelry or lace underthings.

Give chocolates, perfume or flowers instead.

Now, if this is your "one and only", gifts cost should be proportional to the duration of the relationship. You don't give a 1/2 carat ring to someone you've dated for a month.

Jewelry and lingerie should be reserved for someone you should have been married to by now, but haven't.

My favorite items when I was courting? Stuffed animals, (bear, dog, etc.) flowers, and a night out. Do something inventive...a carriage ride perhaps, a stroll in the park. Dining out is overrated (and crowded), but women still enjoy it.

If you are getting flowers, order NOW! Prices for a dozen roses go up exponentially up until Valentine's Day.

Wife and I think of Valentine's Day as just another Hallmark Holiday. Never do nuttin'.

Exception! Every 3-4 years I buy her a couple dozen roses and major treatment at a local spa. She always gets fussy about it but word gets back to me from her friends about how much she loves it--and the preening.

Gotta keep-em of balance. Just when they think you're a total waste of couch space you suck-up in a very public way.

Its good for a few years.

A vexing combination this year, Friday the 13th and Valentine's Day, the 14th. For some, sadly, there is no distinction between the two. One day celebrates misfortune, the other merely compounds it. For many, the 14th is a joyous day. Yes, restaurant owners, greeting card vendors, candy companies, lingerie shops, even valet parking attendants, all hold dear the celebration of love that is manifest that day. Warms my heart to think of it, a single day generating as much as one third of a company's annual revenues.
