I just got laid off and...

It is the happiest day of my life.

I know this is a very common event for quite a few people so I am seeking advice, and I know this is the place to come to.

I will provide some details without mentioning any names at the moment.

I have worked for this compnay for over 6 years part time since I am a student. They have ripped me off, lied, mistreated and neglected me for about 4 of those 6 years.

This morning I drove to my place of employment only to find out that there is nothing for me to do there anymore, I couldnt be happier, but unfortunately this is for today only.

I am sure they will only offer me severence pay for 2 weeks, which I will fight to the bitter end if I have to. I was not even informed that I have no work there anymore. Come tuesday morning, I will go down there again and negotiate the terms of me gettinf laid off. For 6 years of dedication, never being late, and never having any complaints against me, I will not let them off so easy.

Now since these guys will try to get away with murder on every ocasion, it is very likely I will have to consult a lwayer of some type. I was informed that here in Ontario, when it comes to these matters the government provides these services free of charge, unfortunately that is all I know, I never really had any experiance with legal matters since I'm a law obiding citizen, but I refuse to get screwed over.

How exactly should I handle this situation without getting myself in any type of a deadlock, or situations that might make things worse?

Any advice will be definately considered and greatly appreciated.

xp

Bummer on the layoff.. but I can concur (to an extent) with your sentiment.

When I was laid off from my contract at HP post Y2K myself and my co-worker, both let go that day, had a 2-day party and had contracts paying almost 2x as much within the week. Look at it from the bright side.. you are now ever so motivated (or maybe not..) to got and get something orders of magnitude better.

Oddly.. there was a pattern in my life. Every time I bought new tires for any of the cars I got a new and better contract offer... at least that was the case until this last set... Hang in there.. sorry i don't know anything about Candian labor relations.. I hope it works out to your benefit one way or another!!

Go here:

http://www.gov.on.ca/LAB/english/es/factsheets/fs_termination.html

this will let you know all the regulations and conditions for what you are entitled to. It looks like they should owe you a week for every full year of continuous service in lieu of the notice you didn't receive. If they give you any greif, the Labour Board of Ontario will work on your behalf, you can contact them and they will talk you through your particular case. Good luck on the coming search.

I would want to make sure that those rules apply for part time employees. Depending on the rules, he may be better off taking the severance and running, if he's even offered one.

Diesel Power is right, since I was working part time, this company managed to cut every corner when it came to financial matters, so I would not be surpirsed if they tried the same this time, however, I'm sure I'm entitled to something, I just want to know what and how much of it.

As for patterns, I was offered a new position at a different company, all I have to do is show up there on Monday to give my information.

This new company is of higher class, or so I hear and they just merged with two others and are desperate for qualified staff.

I will go talk to the boss there on Monday to see what I can arrange to make sure I have time for my exams, and the new job, which will probably be a full time position for a while.

I checked with our local channeler and she confirmed that Lord Kitchener was reincarnated as Donald Rumsfeld.

Botnst,

I'm not sure to be honest, I believe so, The name was changed for obvious reasons in WWI when it was named Berlin. My last house I found copies of the Berlin Record in the walls kinda cool to read the old sports sections. This is a German community, especially interesting in the fall when we host the largest Oktoberfest celebration (not the BMWCCA GTG) outside of Germany. Basically a massive, gov't sponsored piss up.

XP,

I didn't see any mention of a part time or full time distinction, but from past experiences in the restraunt industries, the part time employees are well protected. Keep in mind the Labour Board of Ontario is weighted in favour of the worker, one of the big reasons unions are unecessary here BTW not that I'm trying to hijack this thread.

XP190,

That company sounds exactly like every jackass employer I've worked for. Sorry for the lay off, but glad for your freedom from oppression.

I was laid off last year around this time. I tried to find a job within my employer, at the time, but I was unsucessful. I tried all the big search companies, Dice, Monster etc, and the only way I found a job was through networking.

Call anyone you know and ask them if they know anyone who might have a job opening in your career area. Don't ask them directly for a job. Be up front and tell them you were laid off.
