21' Little Giant A-frame ladder
We have a lot of customers that have 18’ up to 22’ ceilings. We use an adjustable A-frame ladder that goes from 12’ up to 21’ that will give us a maximum reach of about 24 to 25’ high.

I would think you could lean a normal extension ladder into the angle of the ceiling.
Two extension ladders with scafold between then (doesn't sound fun to me). Or is this not catherdal but just very high ceilings ? I would look at scafolding, sounds like you will have enough work to justify the rental. The safety and ease of work will make it a can't loose. Or like a friend did to paint his high ceilings. The picnic table, on top of saw horses on top of ???? With the ladders on top of that. It was interesting, and OSHA would have had a heart attack. I wouldn't even go near it.

I have done the exact job you are describing numerous times with an extension ladder leaning against the ceiling. The ladder doesn't know that it's not a wall. Just make sure you pad the tip of the ladder so it doesn't bugger up the ceiling. Nevermind- I just noticed that this thread is 7 years old!!
