Subaru Legacy AWD Shudder/Vibration

I have a 1995 Subaru Legacy AWD L Sedan, that I am getting a shudder vibration coming from the right side rear wheel. I am in the process of getting estimates of what it might be, the first place is saying it's in the transmission. The shudder only happens when the car is first moving forward, then the shudder disappears, and it does not happen in reverse. It is not consistently happening all of the time, and can go for a day or two without making any noise.

Anyone have any other thoughts, it currently is at the second place for diagnosis.

another subaru question

In addition to my other post - I have heard that Subaru are quite reliable, if I were to spend the money if indeed it is the transmission who has had success with Subaru's and length of life. This is the first major problem other then normal tune-up's etc that I've had in the years that I've owned the car (5 years)

Any thoughts on this as well .......

Greatly appreciated.

Does the shudder occur when you drive in a straight line? Does it change when you turn the wheel?

Subaru Legacy AWD Shudder/Vibration

It happens straight or turning to other side. the shudder feels like going over ruts in a dirt road, if that helps

My sister has a 1993 Legacy with an automatic transmission that shudders around corners because the middle differential (at the tail end of the transmission) is bad. That differential (which might be called something else by Subaru) is what allows the car to be all-wheel drive. Without it, the car acts like a 4 wheel drive and scrubs its tires and binds up the drive train around corners (unless you are in the mud or snow).

Your car, if I understand correctly, seems to have a different problem, unrelated to going around corners. If your vibration is truly in the right rear, then I don't see how it could be a transmission problem. A transmission problem would affect right and left equally.

Could it be: a bad tire? a bad CV joint in the right rear axle? a bad wheel bearing? a bad bearing in the rear differential? I would want to rule out those things before messing with the transmission.

Another question I would have is whether the vibration is fooling you. It might just seem like it is from the right side only.

I love Subarus. My sister's has about 150,000 miles. The bad middle differential is its first serious problem, although as problems go, a bad differential is pretty serious, cost-wise. My wife's Impreza only has 70,000 miles on it, so it is too early to know how durable it will be. My sense is that it will be highly durable. I have heard of several going past 200,000 miles. That's my goal.

Thanks so much that is very helpful. I received the paperwork & quote from the first shop today and they are specifically stating that it's the clutch in the transmission that is causing the shutter.

Hopefully I will get the dianogsis from the second shop tomorrow or Monday at the latest, to be able to determine what the deal is.

As far as where the shutter is coming from, yeah it could totally be fooling me.
