Seinfeld (vs. Friends)

Love this program

Though it's hard to come across here in the UK, I have every single episode.

Anyone got a favourite episode? I like "the junior mint", where Jerry is going out with someone whose name he can't remember. She tells him it rhymes with a part of the female anatomy... and he keeps guessing..

Friends on the other hand, is not very funny. Try reading a script and it's painful. Only funny because of the characters, and even they are not great characters. Completely uncomplex, totally obvious humour.

You Brits certainly have a different sense of humor than us Americans (I watch the BBC stuff on cable here); I can see how you'd like Seinfeld, but I wouldn't think you'd like Friends much. Regardless, Seinfeld is a hell of a lot funnier than Friends.

I agree with your choice of the Junior Mint episode. Seinfeld is the best comedy show I ever saw and maybe the best TV show that I've seen.

You got it right about Friends - their humor is way too obvious.

While Seinfeld was the best comedy show, the best character I ever saw on TV was Barney Fife on the older, black-and-white Andy Griffith shows. That show also had the funniest running gag - Barney was only allowed to have one bullet and he had to keep it in his shirt pocket. The second funniest running gag was probably Get Smart's cone of silence.

Speaking of great comedy actors, too bad about Tony Randall. He was one funny son of a gun.

As for British TV, I have always liked Monty Python's routines about not being seen. They go around filming examples of people not being seen. Funny as hell.

Are you enjoying HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" on the BBC?

I've seen a lot of Freinds bashing lately, it's low brow, easy humor, it's no Seinfeld or Fraser...

I think it was fine for what it was. Quick, easy, lite, sort of like good fast food. It was probably the best of what comprises 95% of the sitcoms on TV.

Seinfield is the exception to the rule, it was smart and very cynical. All the characters (with the exception of Kramer) were misanthropic and self centered. I'm surprised it was so popular outiside of the coasts.

Curb your Enthusiasm has really gone downhill. It started out being about everyday situations handled poorly by a social retard who didn't know better, to really absurd situations that lack believability. I hope next season improves.

"The boyfriend 1 & 2"

Loved the magic spit thing with Keith Hernandez

Friends isn't even in the same zipcode. There is something to be said about hype.

Favorite eposide of Seinfeld? That is like asking what is your wife´s (significant other´s) best quality? There are so many.

I definately laugh out loud when I think of the "Jr. Mint" episode. But "The Bet" is also one of the best.

As far as it compares to Friends, well you are talking apples and oranges. There is no comparison. The writing (no plot episodes) and the use of double ended meanings in words and phrases can not be compared - Seinfeld wins hands down!!!

There is no other sitcom that I can think of at this moment that has characters that are so self involved-egocentrical-selfcentered and selfish that lasted as long. Not to mention consistant. In other sitcoms you see the characters do or say things that are not consistant with the character meanwhile in Seinfeld, the characters were always consistant - "self involved-egocentrical-selfcentered and selfish."

But I must state that that one of my favorite episodes is "The Assman." (Million to one) Just the thought of Kramer impersonating a Doctor is great!
