Question 300te to 300td

has anyone ever attempted swapping a 603 diesel engine into a 300 te wagon.i am considering this as it is extremely difficult to find a rust free decent 87 wagon up here in the hinterland.

Like Paul said, I would re-post this on the Diesel board.

That said, I don't think it'd be too horribly difficult, but it would be a project. I don't know what sort of engine electronics the 300TE has, but IIRC the OM603 doesn't have any (the 617 definitely doesn't).

Beyond that, the biggest things you'd need to do are modify the fuel system. A fuel return line would need to be installed going back to the tank, and the tank would need to be cleaned out in preparation to put diesel fuel in it.

IIRC engine mounts are the same, so it should bolt right in...same with the bellhousing. I'm not 100% certain there (haven't actually done this, but I asked about something somewhat similar a while back), though; if I'm wrong, hopefully I'll be corrected shortly.

Hope that helps a bit...good luck!

I've been wanting to perform an OM603 diesel-ectomy on a '95 E320 te, then add an intercooler--that would be a sweet ride. An OM606 intercooled turbo would be even sweeter.

IIRC, the only electronic device used by the OM603 is the computer governing the idle speed--sans EGR/ARV of course. I believe all fuel injected cars have a fuel return line to the tank already in place, so that shouldn't be an issue. Don't know if gassers have a tank strainer though. Probably have to use the diesel tranny too.

A fun project for someone with the time and $$$$

ya i definately think it would be a worthwhile project.i like the idea of the extra fuel savings.ive also noticed the interior trim level on the gasser wagon seems to be a lot nicer and the chance of getting a rust free body with an early nineties vintage is definately a plus.getting a donor diesel 300D seems to be getting a little easier now.seen quite a few 87s advertised with marginal body and interior

I don't think the 300TE has an oil cooler and I'm pretty sure the 300TD does. Probably a minor thing.

Can you reuse the hydraulic pump from the TE in TD; i.e., is it part of the same power steering pump set-up? If not, you'll need the hydraulic pump set-up from a TD if the 603 is out of a D or SDL.

Don't forget a Diesel key switch.
