greatful dead, from vw bus to mercedes

can i be the only one that plays the dead in the car still.
do we have any people who have gone to one(hundred?) show or two.
just wondering how many have traded from vw's to mercedes.
after driving bugs and bus's for years it sure is nice to have a car that is fully loaded. a fully loaded bug had a cig. lighter as almost the only option.
thanks
rich

I listen to old Dead boots almost everyday on my hour long commute home from the office. Only way to deal with traffic without getting all stressed out. Been to maybe 30 or so shows before Jerry passed away. I never drove a VW though...Traded up from Hondas; although I have definately spent more the my share of nights in the back of a bus driving to the next town. I see a couple benz's a week that come into my shop with GD related stickers on their rides. I always make sure they get the best service possible...

cornell '77 (I think) is in the sdl right now.
scarlet begonias>fire on the mountain has such a great transition.

funny, after a police beating scandal in pittsburgh in the 80s related to a Dead show, they were forbidden from returning. My folks considered the dead satanic, preferring Cindi Lauper and Lionel Ritchie for the selections from columbia house LP club...

Hard to believe jerry's been dead 8 or 9 years now- was it 95 or 96? I was with a girlfriend's ultra-con parents at the time, and they commented that if he was cremated that the attendees were likely to get a contact buzz. yeah, they sucked...

I never had a bus, although it wasn't for lack of trying. Looked at several, but being concerned about actually arriving in a bus caused me to pass on every one. bad maintenance seemed the norm, as did duct tape dust boots underneath...

unbroken chain for me. they played that for the first time in forever a year or two before jerry died at a show I was supposed to see. visited my sister instead. lesson learned: take sister to show.

I wish I had a way of posting a picture of me in my '67 split window bus with all four wheels a full foot off the ground down in SF. I had just successfully transplanted a balljoint frontend from a '70 single cab, and was doing some stress tests by racing down those steep hills there, then launching off the level sections midway down the slope--what a rush!

Never got into the Dead (though I may have looked like it at some point), but I did transition from 20+ VW's to MB's.

thanks for the reply's. has anyone been to deer creek?the lawn their was so comfy.never felt that type of grass, kind of like carpet
what i noticed is the people on the east coast and midwest, chicago area, really party very hard. maybe from being cooped up all winter. when i went to the san francisco area shows it was more of a family type show with people bringing their kids and making a day of it. much less drinking at the west coast show's. seattle wa. was kind of neat being next to the space needle. living very close to san francisco, going to see the jerry garcia band shows was a blast. very small at the warfield in san fran.the shows were a great change from what was turning into really huge dead shows. never thought i would like blue grass, but old and in the way changed that.
oh well that was the old days.
no more old vw's for me.mercedes is here to stay. it's so nice to have all these 78- 95 mercedes in so cal to choose from, and for the most part they are the same price as used honda/toyotas
oh well thanks for the reply,s
in the car is dick's picks and lots of jgb cd's
without love in a dream it will never come true

My older brothers were really into the dead. I remember my brother following them all around the country about 4 years ago in a VW bus. That VW bus had bundt rims on it and it looked pretty spiffy I must say. That brother now drives a 190D. He is still into the dead music, etc. He got rid of the dread-locks though.
My mom and I got him a GD license plate frame, but he doesn't want to put it on because cops will mess with him. It hink that's hardly an excuse. The frame would look nice on his MB.
Thanks
David

The drinking was heavier at the Southern shows compared to say, Red Rocks, but I am truly glad if it all had to end, it ended in time to not have to deal with all these punkassess that are doing xtc, robotripping and the like

Couldn't agree more. Since when did the tour kid culture and the rave kid culutre become so interchangable?

I don't even think I'm especially old yet. I just remember a time when nobody locked their buses, their wasn't people ransacking campsites and there was a real sense of community.

I don't have a problem with the extra-curriculers persay, rather the prevailing attitudes that seem to go along with them. My buddy's bus got broken into on shakedown street at alpine valley the last time we went to a phish show (lets' not start a phish vs. dead thing here, we all know who comes out on top). It's sad to think that what was once such a cool little nomadic village became almost a drug swap meet for once a year suburban "hippies". Sorry, rant over. Come to think of it, I've been uncharacteristically up on the ole soapbox in general today.
peace,
phaedrus

living in ca. dead stuff is still normal on cars.
ocean beach in san diego has a lot of heads floating around.
to bad summers are just not the same anymore.
thanks
