what is usually a conservatives standpoint on pollution/environmental issues?
I just ask becxause I'm curious.

I don't take the global warming theories as gospel. It's been well documneted tha this planet has had very wide climate swings long before we ever bacame a dominant species.
I also take into account that every time there is a volcanic event, that one single event pumps more crap into the atmosphere than we ever have. That said, I still believe that as a species capable of creating mechanical devices that DO put out pollution - we DO have a responsibility to contunually pursue improving those devices, to reduce thier emmissions. I know that we can make quite a mess on a localized level. Any city, or chemical plant is more than enough proof of this. As for climate though, beyond that same localized level (read urban heat island effect), I don't believe that we are having a measured effect on our planets climate. |
I suppose if conservative Republican means I have to have no concern for the environment, then I can't be a conservative Rep.
Like Diesel Power, I think global warming is bunk. It does serve the agenda of the enviro-nazis, though. But as an avid outdoorsman, I am dismayed at the continued development of our countryside. Much of this may be due to living in northern VA, where every un-developed spot of land is disappearing to developers. I like the idea of responsible use of the earth's resources. Properly done, drilling in ANWAR is feasable, for example. However, cutting down millions of trees in old-growth forests and saying that you (the company) plant more trees than are cut down doesn't "fly" with me. There are some things about an old forest that a new tree farm cannot replace. When's the last time any one of us could walk through the woods and drink out of a creek without wondering if the water were safe to drink? |

In the 1990's I watched Gov. George Bush of Texas and his pals in the utilities industry, the chicken industry and the oil industry turn Texas into an envirommental disaster area. They could care less about the enviroment, the only thing they care about is money. I would consider anyone who supports these people being in power as anti-environment. His Orwellain-named environmental bills, like the "Blue Skies Initiative" which allows more air pollution, show what gross hypocrites and phonies he and his cronies are when it comes to environmental policy. Under the Bush admin istration, the current conservative standpoint on the environment is "rape".

Mr. Bush is the leader of the conservative "movement", proposes and attempts to implement their rapist environmental policies. Its a fact, and so there it is.

What environmental issues?
OK, bad joke. Did anyone see how Milwaukee just dumped raw sewage into Lake Michigan because something went wrong with their sewage system. Ughh. In Missouri, even just a few decades ago, you could drink from certain running streams. Missouri has been blessed with a lot of natural beauty and undeveloped space, probably because no one knows its here because no one comes here! I wouldn't do it now. I wouldn't eat fish from a lot of places either. One of my favorite rivers just a few years ago was ruined because of a sewage main break. One long stretch of it is completely void of life and there is no more canoeing there. One big problem Missouri has is corporate pig farms. The pig crap gets bulldozed into rivers and there is absolutely nothing good about pig crap. Its total poison. |

The Mrs. and I are registered republicans, but I`m not going to claim to be a "conservative" rep. Why not? `Cause where is the "conserve" in conservative with just about all republicans? Conservative in name only shows me most repub politicians are just hiding behind something. We are appauled by the stance this party has taken on almost all environmental issues, big business and short term gains have taken over the party. Our republican congressman is one of the few on The Hill who have our interests in mind when he votes on a bill... can likely be said about the dems too but less so on enviro issues. The only two things this administration has been on the right side of are diesel sulfur content regs and defending wetlands from the NAHB (National Assoc of Home Builders) in the Supreme Court.... and winning. Other than that they are abizmal. We feel like players without a team. :( |
As I understand it, the conservative view of ecological issues is not as bleak as it's been made out to be. The economic influences are certainly there, but there is also a view of managed stewardship of natural resources as opposed to a "let nature take care of itself" view of some on the other side of the aisle. There are positives and negatives inherent in both points of view.

Sorry, but when I look at what nature dumps into the atmosphere, and what we do, th numbers pale in comparison. Beyond a microclimate level, we just aren't a player. |
Remember that conservation does not mean preservation. Conservatives like to maintain maximum exploitable output. D’s and R’s share alike in that history evenly.
There is no party that I know of that will put environmentalism ahead of making money. Also, global warming, while not trivial, is trivial by comparison to over fishing the seas, air and water pollution, reduction of fresh, clean water. Heck, around here they even advise not eating snow at the 14,000+ foot level atop of Mt Rainier, as tests have shown that the snow contains enough pollutants to kill. |
