How did the Yankees wind up with the best record in the Majors?
The Yankees seem to be playing way below their ability, but somehow they have the best record in baseball (so far).
Here's a link to the current standings. I have loved the Yankees ever since I went to my first Major League game at D.C. Stadium in about 1967 or so. I remember seeing Joe Pepitone standing on first base, combing his hair. As a 10-year-old I thought that he must have been the coolest human being ever, the epitome of cool. Considering the way I feel about the Lakers, I understand why so many people hate the Yankees, but they are easily my favorite sports team, and that includes my college teams. |

If you check individual stats, you'll find that there are no Yankee players (except Mariano for relief) in the top position for RBI, HR, etc., but considering the talent purchased, you'd expect them to be more than 1 game or a half game ahead of the second place team in the division (Boston). As shown last year, money can't guarantee a championship, but it should get you some consistency to be in the running.

Money helps, a lot, but you need more than money to sustain excellence for as long as the Yankees have done.
The Red Sox's 2003 lineup was better than the Yankees and I think they improved themselves in the off-season more than the Yankees did, so I don't feel bad that the Yankees are only a game in front of the Sox. None of this matters, of course, until September. |

If the Red Sox don't do it this year, I fear they never will.....

What the money the Yankees have spent provides them with is a very deep team on the bench, talent wise. This supplements the amazing stating lineup they have. Their team has been and is deeper than most.
They have guys that could easily start for several other teams. .02

For all the deals and sales the Red Sox made this is one department they cannot compete in. Now if they had Dusty Baker, as a Yankee fan, I would be very worried indeed. Also what is up with Nomar? Memo to the Red Sox, get rid of this guy already! Give the money to Ortiz And if it wasn't for his home runs Manny would be a considered a joke at left. Are they worth it? |

You're right -- Nomar is useless -- I don't care how good he is when he's healthy. I doubt if the Sox are going to have Manny, Pedro and Schilling as a threesome after this year. That makes this year almost do or die for them. They've got a good shot -- as good as last year, maybe better. They'd better get it done in a hurry.

Sox fans seem to really like Nomar. I went to a Sox-Orioles game last year in Baltimore. There were more Nomar jerseys in the stands than all the Orioles jerseys put together. As a Yankees fan, I must say I was happy with Nomar's performance in the 2003 ALCS.

A Baltimore fan asks, " Does anyone have any pitching to sell?
I grew up on Orioles baseball, from their beginnings in '54 to world champions. "The Oriole Way" was synonomous with pitching and defense. This most recent incarnation is truly hard to watch. Our "star" pitcher has given up 7, or more runs in 6 starts this year and we just started June! |

The Orioles need to find a way to fire their owner.
