Kemah Wheels and Keels — sidebar
Periodically, I get invited to sail on Elissa, the Galveston Historical Fondation's restored 1877 square-rigger. The last two times I've been on her, a gent from someplace in Georgia is also on board. He combines his spring trip to Elissa with showing his pride and joy at the Wheels & Keels show (I think that's what it's called) in Kemah.
His toy at the show? A 65' Trumpy. Not many folks know what a Trumpy is so, you sort of have the secret handshake when you ask about it by brand name. Anyway, it's a plank on frame boat that's been sheathed in epoxy impregnated fiberglass. The bottom is completely fair and, if you didn't know better, you would think that the boat was fiberglass. He said that it took over 2000 man-hours to fair the glass on that bottom.
