I got to take a segway for a spin!

I completely forgot to mention this, but last week I got to ride a segway around my brothers new office. One of his co workers has one. It is way cool.

you look forward and give it a little lean and it goes, and you look up and it slows down to a stop. you have a switch ont he left handle to initiate turning. all I can say is its cool as hell.

goes like 12 mph, but man is it a fun ride.

And being able to turn circles in one place is fun, but don't try to go too fast or do it too long. hehe.

Very cool little device, definately rates high on the initial fun factor, but not sure if it will last.

Still, was real fun running it up and around the office space.

Anyone else have a chance to take one for a spin yet?

Alon

I saw one being demo'd at the International car show in Seattle back in October(?). Unfortunately they weren't letting anyone but the pretty girl ride it around (but that was ok )
Aren't they pretty spendy? Seems they're several thou or more. Looks like a hoot to ride tho!

The Ihilani Resort and Country Club uses Segways for their roving security guards on the property. It gives you a 6-8" lift off of the ground and they're pretty cool looking. They bought 5 at $8,900.00 each and had a guy come out to train.

well I didn't get to let it out at top speed. You know can't go too fast down hallways in an office.

you would probably have ot duck going through a doorway, it does lift you off the ground several inches.

Definately fun, but too much $$$$ for a toy like that to me.

I have seen the demo's on these.

They are indeed cool as hell.

For the inventor to claim that the gyro operated scooter is going to revolutionize the way people get around is a joke.

Way too much coin for "IT."

They were ripped off. They can be puchased at amazon.com for $5k. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00007EPJ6/ref=segway_tn_left/102-4750093-4261754 I've seen these being used in Disney world for the parking lot operations.

When I saw it being demo'd at the car show, they had a little obstacle course kind of a thing the gal was driving it on. Ramps and bumps and turns. (Was hard to concentrate on the Segway ) I was amazed at how controlable it was.

I agree, they were purchased before Kaman and the Segway people signed the deal with Amazon. Initally, the Segway people were boasting about how they weren't going to "mass market" the Segway through resellers to protect "the brand", but I guess you can never say never.

Just recently Honolulu passed a city ordanance for the Segways since using it on the sidewalk would have violated the existing law against powered devices other than wheelchairs, on the walkways. I seem to recall that San Francisco was debating whether to allow them too.

I think I remember reading that the US Postal Service in Florida purchased a bunch of them for mailmen (you know, "lettercarriers" in PC). Just more government spending efficiency.

It would be interesting to know what size obstruction would put you on your face.... like mismatched sidewalks..... a vertical face of how many inches ?
RE the inventors first claims about revolutionizing travel in cities :.... LOL.... how many would use these in Chicago in the winter....

I go to Manchester, NH on business a lot. The thing was invented there. Go to downtown Manch and the damn things are all over the place. The downtown cops love em. It has increased their ability to write parking tickets by 300%.
