That thinks new cars are better. and she thinks her friends 95 dodge Intrepid is better than my 1984 300SD, when it is already dead after 9 years. and my car is still running fine after 20 years.

She doesn't seem to understand the idea that some cars are built better than others and my 300Sd is a piece of crap because it is 20 years old , she also said she wouldn't pay more than $500 for mine, and no way it is worth $2-5K still. can't convince them to like old things like we do i suppose.

so how do your SO think about your passion for these cars? (older models preferrably)

I got lucky...my girlfriend loves my 300D so much that she wants one of her own. I'm trying to talk her into a W115 240D, and after she drove my friend's Euro 300D 4 speed, I just may have won that battle.



She even likes driivng my truck...although I'm not in danger of her stealing the truck like I am with the car...

No matter how old they are, I always get compliments about my 126's. Sometimes there are notes left on the windshield asking for the price.

In fact, I'm actually embarassed to show that I drive Mercedes of any year.

Every girl who's known has been impressed with them. LOL, they're chick magnets.

If you aren't a "home" connisseur (sp), you might think it unwise to consider purchasing a 100 yr. old tudor classic home vs. a brand-spanking new ranch-style home.

My Mom thinks that if a vehicle requires any servicing over and above a fillup, it's time to sell it!

At the risk of sounding like an old nag, find someone who is compatiable with your viewpoint.

A couple of months ago, my wife received her 2004 car. Yet, she loves her two 1968 cars with a passion, and loves my 1959 car. My wife has no problems driving 1980s cars over her 2001-2004 cars. They are all MBs. If we were to lose everything we have tomorrow, my wife wouldn't car if she drove a Ford Pinto. These are just cars. There's a whole lot more to life than cars.

My wife and I began our MB collection with diesels. Some of our ex-cars were leaky suckers and left oil stains and puddles of transmission and steering fluid on driveways. They were also loud and at times massively smokey. Who cares? That didn't stop us from enjoying MB cars.

I had been looking for more than a couple months...

Wife said "You can buy whatever you want (less than $4000) as long as you know you'll be happy with it" (we cant afford anything more than $4k anyway....)

I finally found the 240d/stick of my dreams (260k, right price, china blue, sunroof(!), trailer hitch, ex-mechanic owner...) and her comments were
"hmm....no rust, all one color, John, this is the nicest car you've ever owned."

She still hates the fact that you cant just lift a lever and let the pass. seat tilt all the way back (like Uhmerican and Japanese cars do), she HAS to be able to sleep when I'm driving...so no MB's for her (blah)

I'll keep her.

My old GF started off the same way thinking my car was a POS because it was old. After a few triple digit romps, some tail sliding, and blazing tires it kind of changed.
What I find really funny is in all the time I have had my 533 my friends would always say just save for a new car.....
They have been through 2-6 cars since then and I still have the 533
It's all about how you feel about the car. My old GF now says that I should get a new car blah blah blah. But a lot of people don't understand the connection you can have with the car. Memories are not something you can replace and everytime I get in my car there are memories everywhere some good some bad.

I have one simple rule (well more than one, but that's another story) when it comes to girls. She don't like the Fairlane, aint much chance she really likes me. Right now, with the bodywork and paint still waiting, that thins things out pretty good. Still, you're always going to have a crowd of woman who've been brainwashed into thinking if it's over a certain age it can't be reliable/comfortable/safe/driveable. Actually, I'm kind of proud to say that very few women would be able to drive my car with ease. Manual steering, brakes, three speed colomn shift (that part stops a lot of people cold, "How the heck can you drive this?"), and a heavy clutch. I could try to explain that having a torquey V8 makes it easier to drive around town, but I don't think I'd get anywhere. It doesn't look like much right now, but I gave a friend a ride on the back roads, and the first thing he said was "You have one awesome car!" A few people get our obsessions, many will never understand.

tk - that is pretty much how we do it around here but I have to listen to an earful if I don't do 2.

Mine likes the 300SD but does not have much use for the W123's.

I suppose some see cars as mere transportation. when most people who read this board doesn't. I just wish she didn't see my lovely car assuch a POS.

Shoot Frank, my wife grew up driving farm vehicles. I remember as clear as though yesterday seeing her drive a diesel tractor while her uncles, brother, and Dad pulled corn and threw it in the trailer. My little honey was wearing cut-offs and a halter top. I was slain at that moment.

She learned to drive on a late 1950's Ford 3spd on a tree. If she had half a chance she'd drive the Mog to work. 3rd grade teacher.

Still slays me.
