Chicken Hawks and cajones
Some on this board have expressed admiration for G.W. Bush's "cajones" in going to war with Iraq. I wonder--is that all it takes to earn this macho title? In truth, most of the architects of the Iraq war are Chicken Hawks--men who rarely see a war they do not love, yet who also have an aversion to actually fighting in them.
Bush himself, for example, maintains to this day that the Vietnam war was a good cause, yet he used family connections to avoid combat. Cheney used, first, a student deferment, then a married deferment, and finally, when that would not secure his safety from the draft, he and his wife had a child, an automatic deferment at the time. At least Rumsfeld is a WWII vet, but by and large the neo-con brigade that dictates the tenor of U.S. foreign policy is loaded with Chicken Hawks, people like Wolfowitz and Feith. The Republican publicity machine seems bent on redefining the notions of toughness and patriotism. For example, they managed to question Max Cleland's patriotism, even though he left three limbs on the battlefield in Vietnam. And of course, they question Kerry's courage and patriotism, because (like thousands of others) he chose to fight in Vietnam, but became disillusioned with that war once he got there. So you Bush supporters, how is it that you give your man a high mark for toughness, "cajones," when the record indicates that he has run from any battle that might have put himself in jeopardy.
