OBD-II scares me.

My wife had her '99 Tahoe in for an emissions inspection a few weeks ago here in the state of WA for the first time and all they did was hook up a connector to where you would hook up the diagnostic scan tool. It just took a few minutes and it was done. The print out didn't show any problems but it didn't show anything about how it did as far as emissions levels. I have no idea how close or how far it was from the max allowed levels. With the older cars you would get a print out of all the emissions levels. This scares me. I have no idea what's going on anymore.
Are the emissions tests the same in other states with the OBD-II systems?

Here in Virginia, the car is put on the chassis rollers, hooked up to the OBD-II port and 'driven' over a cycle. You care given a printout of the test and if you pass, ie no MIL or high readings, you're on your way. If your MIL is on, you fail.

MIL = Malfunction Indicator Lamp, or check engine light.

I have a code reader for my two Volvos, the MB is too early and has OBD-I, and I like it. The diagnonis is shorter because there are more functions monitored. Out of spec sensors are pinpointed faster. If you get the PC programs, there are nice displays and a lot more data is displayed as opposed to the handheld units. Mine is handheld.

I'll remember never to take in a car for an inspection with the MIL on. So my guess is, if a fault code comes up then the light will go on no matter what it is?
I was looking in the Tahoe's FSM and there were several pages of DTC codes in it.

Yes, there are many codes. They all mean something. If you get a code reader and the MIL come on, you can read the code and either fix it yourself or take it in.

I've only had the MIL come on once on the Tahoe. I took it down to a mechanic I know and he hooked up his code reader and all it ended up being was the gas cap didn't get tightened enough. I changed the seal on the cap just to be on the safe side. I prefer my 300D over the Tahoe any day for its simplicity and no computers. I wish MB imported a diesel SUV back when my 300D was made.

Maryland reads the ODB and sends you on your way. If you don't have the ODB then they test it.

I had the CE light on in my C43 so I took it to the dealership. They did some work and reset the computer. When I took it to the emissions station they told me I would have to come back when the computer had time to gather info again. They gave me a six month waiver.
