private fuel storage
Anyone have fuel storage (gas and/or diesel) at their property? I'm curious about what volume of fuel purchase is needed for volume discount Also, how long does fuel keep?

Howdy Tracy,
At work we have 4 tanks for fuels. Reg. unleaded,road diesel,red diesel & avgas. We don't get a price break. When we order 400 or more gallons we don't have to pay a delivery fee which is $35.00. One generator that we have has had diesel fuel in it for at least 2 years and we run it once a month for about an hour and it runs fine. |
I don`t know if this will help but for over four years now we`ve been storing our biodiesel in a 500 gallon tank. I`d say we`ve probably gone through 4,000 gallons or so and a 500 gallon delivery lasts lasts us about six months. We`re careful to add biocide with each filling also. Never had any problems. Environmental conditions are important to consider when storing fuel. Try to keep it out of the rain and sun, although we had ours exposed on the south side of a building for three years with no adverse effects. Contact the folks you plan on getting deliveries from and ask about a minimum delivery charge and volume discounting.

My parents have something like a 250 gallon tank in the ground that was used mostly for just having a convenient supply of gasolene. There was never much of anything in the way of a discount, but delivery was free. They typically would swing by whenever convenient to combine clients on a single run.
This was so long ago that the fuel companies provided the tank and pump for free - I don't think that happens very much now. I remember as a child helping to dig the hole ourselves to save money on the installation. Where I grew up you hit bedrock at three feet down. Lots of chipping with an iron bar. I think 250 gallons of gasolene would easily last 5 years or longer in underground storage. Diesel would probably last 15-20 years. I know directly about the gasolene storage lasting 5+ years underground, not really sure about diesel storage though. Underground storage is far superior to aboveground storage with respect to the length of time you can store the fuel. Ken300D |
My friend who owns a ranch tells me the price breaks start at the 1,000 gallon point on gas. I don't know what it'd be for diesel.
He claims he saves about 30% buying 1,000 galons at a time. I do know that some of the big ranchers send trucks directly to the gas refineries here in Houston and haul it themselves, and they supposedly really save a bundle. The price difference between the refinery loading dock and your local gas station is about double, plus transporation costs, so if gas is selling for about 1.80 at the 7-11 here in Houston, its going for about 90 cents at the refinery. Thats not always true, but its a pretty good rule of thumb. |
