Hockey box scores in the newspaper...
I love Hockey and have followed it for years but I forget something about box scores: In the box score for an NHL game there is a number immediately after the Period name (1st, 2nd, 3rd) followed by a comma and then the scoring in the period starts followed by penalties, etc. That number doesn't add up to anything in the box score - what does it mean? Sometimes its there and sometimes it's not.

Howdy dtf,
I follow hockey but I don't look at box scores. Maybe it is one of these- shots on goal, scoring chances or the real biggy, "hits". which isn't an official stat. But I don't think scoring chances is either.

Can't be number of shots because it is usually a low number like 2 or 3.

Could be number of 'icings' in the period.
