Do you love your job?
 

I wonder how many people truly love their job versus those who see it as just a source of a check.

What are the signs one should start considering a career change?

I love what I do. I'm a network engineer and I get equipment off ebay so I can practice on it at home. I read books on networking whenever I can.

I know the guys that are there for a check when they make fun of me for learning outside of work. Frankly, there isn't much I'd rather be doing.

That said, I'm not too fond of my company at the moment.

My rule of thumb for whether or not I should consider changing jobs- if I wake up in the morning, and (consistently) feel like I would rather die than go to work, then it is time to think about changes. Everyone once in awhile, you dread a stressful day, that is normal, but I am talking about hating it all the time.

That said, I actually look forward to progressing on projects come Monday mornings- yes, I actually look forward to getting into the office after a weekend to myself- maybe I am weird.

So yes, I love my job, wish I made more money, but as long as I can continue to pay the bills and not dread waking up every morning, then in my book, I am doing something right.

I find my job constantly interesting, which helps. It varies from week to week, so I don't have much time to get bored.

I'm a machinist, since 1986. Used to love it. Now it's a way to pay the mortgage.
I've decided it would still be a great career if we could get rid of the customers.

Sometimes I love what I do. It's very frustrating at times, though...

Signs to change? When I was in the fitness field, a sign to change was the fact that I used maybe 10% of what I'd learned. Most people didn't want fitness experts, they wanted quick fixes. Screw 'em, off to fix computers.

Sign to change from computer repair... Too monotonous, felt like my brain was being wasted away and that I was doomed to forever chase Intel and Microsoft, simply learning about the latest whiz-bang thing they came out with (and how to fix it, in the case of microsoft).

Looong way of stating that when you feel like you're not using all of your potential or that you've got no more room to grow, it'd probably be worth switching. Best of luck. :)

I loved my job when I had one. Getting paid to sit on your arse playing records is great (radio sound engineer). I always used to think it was a nice 'suprise' to get my pay cheque at the end of the month thinking I actually get paid for doing something I loved...

I'm finding it very hard to get work now though, so a career change to something less exciting may be in order.

Sometimes. Like now - I have three weeks fieldwork in the Western Isles of Scotland coming up, working on the Machair (grassland) biology on the shore of the Atlantic, in a beautiful unspoilt environment with ancient history all around (standing stones etc). Downside is writing and tedious analysis.

I love my job enough to settle for being underpaid. I've been working at a professional theatre for a year now, and hopefully a well-deserved raise will be in the near future. *fingers crossed*

I took leave today. I have about a month of leave accrued and what I don't use, I lose so I take a day off every now and then and will take a couple of weeks around Christmas.

I work for the .gov. The salary is not competitive with industry and the benefits (leave, retirement, medical, etc) are matched by some major corporations, but are better than most. But who takes a job for the bennies?

What this job offers is an opportunity for my work to shape the way policymakers and citizens view natural resources. If my team does its job, you never know what we've done because its not our job to have a public profile. We elect people who appoint people to be mouthpieces for the administration. Its their job to go on camera or to Congress.

Regardless of which party is in power, we do the same work. We have benchmarks and standards and rigorous QA/QC before our products go upstream. What happens in Washington has been described as akin to sausage-making. Hopefully, if they get good, accurate, dependable raw material they will produce a wholesome sausage. Or a reasonable facsimile.

Its not personal, its business.

The company, thats another story. Years of being treated like a "unit of expense" vs. a valuable part of a team. One employee group pitted against the other etc. etc.

Hopefully the "new boss" is changing some of those attitudes. If not who knows how long we will survive.
