Just wondering, I don't wish to offend anyone but in my own observations I have witnessed the following:

1. There is an actual labor shortage with skilled trades and related fields.

2. There are many people to fill the positions but they were let go during the slowdown because they were not considered "good".

3. The The people that are available for work are for the most part lazy stupid idiots that think that work is an entitlement.

Again no offense to anyone I made some very broad comments but the idiots I'm talking about couldn't read this because they pawned their computer already.

Last company I was at when someone got laid off they were "made available to the industry".

Well said MedMech in this country if you want a job you can get one. Excuses are just BS.

Jobless claims increase

Government report shows 352,000 filed for initial benefits last week, more than expected.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Jobless claims rose last week, the government said Thursday, with the number of people filing for initial unemployment benefits above Wall Street expectations.

The Labor Department report showed 352,000 filed for first-time benefits in the week ended June 5, compared with a revised 340,000 the previous week.

Economists surveyed by Briefing.com were forecasting filings would drop to 335,000 in the most recent period.

The latest reading increased the closely watched moving average to 346,000, up 4,750 from the previous week's revised average of 341,250. The most recent reading is the highest weekly total in seven weeks.

Jobless claims and the overall employment picture are being watched by investors for signs of how fast the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates. The Fed left rates low throughout 2003 despite signs of an improving economy because a weak employment outlook worked to limit inflationary pressures. But three straight months of strong monthly jobs report has led investors to expect the first rate hike in four years at the June 30 meeting.

This should make for an interesting data sampling . . . male, Mercedes owning, computer users.

Are there jobs to be had? Of course there are, that's why college graduates are competing against high school students for summer and entry level service sector jobs this year, however there are plenty of blue and white collar workers out there, many in the later part of their careers, that have seen their jobs lost to plant closures, "right sizing", consolidation and outsourcing who may be incapable of re-entering the job market without 1) substantial changes in lifestyle, including relocations; 2) considerable re-training for entry level positions; and 3) substantial disruption in retirement strategies.

One has to distinguish "having a job" versus poverty, since it is still the case in the country that a person can have a full time job, but due to the minimum wage and the cost of living, still be considered living in poverty.

I am gainfully employed. Oh yes, there are jobs around for those who want jobs: just not the type of jobs that one seeks out looking for. Even the most highly qualified people have a tough time finding appropriate jobs in their fields of specialization, at their level of professional experience and educational qualifications, at the salaries they desire, etc. The industry I work in is infamous of spitting out 30K to 50K positions a year. And I don't mean just temporary lay offs either: the positions just disappear either through restructuring, downsizing or mergers. I have friends who have been unemployed for 2-1/2 years. Good people; hard workers; 25 years of experience; several kids in college. Thankfully they have enough accumulated wealth that it does not affect their lifestyles. Think of those who are a whole lot less fortunate. So, for the most part, for one to claim that the unemployed are just lazy is just plain disingenuous. Of course, this is not targetted at MedMech and I am speaking in generalities.

I am gainfuly employed as well. If I wasn't I'd be too busy to post here, as I'd be training for a new field. I hate where I'm at now, and eventually want out.

I worked for da man once hated it and made my own job, I got sick of that and made another.

The main point of my post is I have promising positions for people but i can't find people who need work that don't have their head up their A$$ or think that their worth some huge amount of money, which might explain why they've been out of work for 2 years and the bank is foreclosing on them.

Personally I think this little economic correction is good, it helps employers see the $hit thats sitting at the bottom.

I have no idea what category I fall into, retired and dabbling?

Again I'm not saying that all unemployed are lazy ect, I know many got a raw deal due to circumstances beyond their control and I hope the best for any forum members.....except one:)

Ironically, I'm also hiring a Managing Director. This person's main responsibilities will be writing grants and coordination volunteer activities. Other menial tasks include taking the concert artists out to dinner and picking them up from the airport.

Got a job. White collar network engineering in wireless telecom.

I'm pretty stoked because we're bringing 3 new people on in our group of 16, one of which will be my assistant/junior planner.

The "work" that I hate the most is yard work.. If it was up to me, I'd pave my whole back yard. - more space for parking!!:D

I don't do any kind of meaningful work. I'm a programmer.
