Greatest classic rock bands of all time (from a decidedly alternative perspective): Roxy Music and Little Feat. Others include Rory Gallagher ("Irish Tour" may be the finest live album of all time), The Kinks, Graham Parker, Tommy Bolin. Finest album ever made by an artist that no one's ever heard of: "Prince of the Deep Water" (1991) by The Blessing (William Topley). More recent favorites: "Tragic Kingdom" and "Return of Saturn" by No Doubt; 2 latest offerings by Sixpence None the Richer, and all entries from Matchbox Twenty (Rob Thomas is one of the finest rock vocalists ever).

Like many here, I'm still time warped back to the 60s and 70s for my favorite music. I hated most of the music of the disco and hair band 80s, loved the grunge 90s and am pretty neutral on the corporate music of the 21st century. If I was to make a list it would be:
Jethro Tull Steely Dan The Pretenders The Beach Boys The Beatles Rolling Stones Stone Temple Pilots Early Pearl Jam Frank Zappa I also do a heavy blues thing and have an extensive collection of the greats. John Lee Hooker is hands down favorite, with Willie Dixon, The King of the Chicago Blues, coming in second. I also like to make my neighbors think I go to church a lot by playing the choral parts of Beethovens glorious 9th at top volume on Sunday. I'd love to hear what you all have for systems, I being of the audiophile type. I play my music on a mix of 70's model HK pre-amps and equalizers on the signal side, late model HK front and rear power amps for juice, and two sets of Infinity speakers, Reference 2000 dual cones in the rear and 12 in Studio Monitors up front. Lately I have added all the AV stuff using an HK AV amp, and all the little speakers and sub woofer stuff that gives me a headache when my kids play Eminem and all those other ****heads on it. Dude -- I'm from Chicago, and attended Mother's Day concerts more than once (the Mothers of Invention used to play Chicago every Mother's Day -- it was tradition).
I used to practically live at a well-known local Blues bar called Fitzgerald's. For my money, the King of Chicago Blues is a man named Lonnie Brooks. Check out Blessing's "Prince of the Deep Water" -- you'll like it! Last edited by GermanStar; 06-12-2004 at 02:14 PM. |

Yeah, Frank used to make regular stops in Dallas back in my party days. My most memerable concert was one around 1981 or so at the Ft. Worth Convention Center where he had a huge screen behind him showing r.Crumb cartoons based on "Steve's Spanking" as they performed the tune. To get an idea of what that would be like, think of the lyrics "first the hairbrush, then the banana!". It ended with the little black guy on sax performing a simulated sex act on Frank with his alto. Man, the guy could really blow that thing.
Frank zappa (lead guitar) Ray white (guitar, vocals) Steve vai (guitar) Tommy mars (keyboards, vocals) Bobby martin (keyboards, saxophone, vocals) Ed mann (percussion) Scott thunes (bass) Chad wackerman (drums) His name is stevie vai And he’s a crazy guy Last november, I recall, He needed a spanking He decided then A female specimen Would be excitin’ for a night To give him a spanking Laurel was her name She came to notre dame He told me just the other day He oughta be thanking Her for the spanking She was large and soft And she beat him off Made him drool upon his dork And gave him a wanking After the spanking Hair brush! Oh! what a hair brush! (it’s not that he requires grooming! Guys with light blue hair never do!) Then she did explain: There’s another game That we can play with this device, And then a banana! It was slightly green Vapors in between Rising up to fill the room And cook the banana She said it was dry Stevie won’t you try To drool a little drool on it And grease the banana Later in the dawn Laurel carried on She got right up and dressed herself and Ate the banana Last edited by KirkVining; 06-12-2004 at 01:19 PM. |

Anybody hear the interview of J.J. Cale this morning (Sunday) on NPR. I think I better buy the album, its been a long time since I've listened to him and this is all new songs (well, as new as Cale's songs can be).
Also caught Leo Kotke on "Prairie Home Companion". I really like Kotke. His version of John Prine's "Hello in There" just brings tears to my eyes its so beautifully sung and played. What a musician! Speaking of Prine, one of my favorites of his is, "Paradise". Also like, "Sam Stone". Oh and you modern-day anti-warriors could probably find pleasure in, "Great Compromise". He's a great one of sharp lyrics, is Prine. Snibble, I was sort of like "Joker", who's helmet is your avatar in my ambivalence to the Vietnam war. I love that scene in which some Col quizes Joker about the mixed messages (http://www.moviesounds.com/fmj.html). Colonel: Marine, what is that button on your body armour? Joker: A peace symbol sir. Colonel: Where'd you get it? Joker: I don't remember sir. Colonel: What is that you've got written on your helmet? Joker: "Born to Kill" sir. Colonel: You write "Born to Kill" on you helmet, and you wear a peace button. What's that supposed to be, some kind of sick joke? Joker: No, sir. Colonel: Well what is it supposed to mean? Joker: I don't know, sir. Colonel: You don't know very much do you? Joker: No sir. Colonel: You better get your head and your ass wired together or I will take a giant **** on you. Joker: Yes sir. Colonel: Now answer my question, or you'll be standing tall before The Man. Joker: I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man sir. Colonel: The what? Joker: The duality of man, the Jungian thing, sir. Colonel: Who's side are you on, son? Joker: Our side, sir. Colonel: Don't you love your country? Joker: Yes, sir. Colonel: Well how about getting with the program? Why don't you jump on the team and c'mon in for the big win? Joker: Yes, sir. Colonel: Son, all I've ever asked of my Marines is for them to obey my orders as they would the word of God. We are here to help the Vietnamese because inside every gook, there is an American trying to get out. It's a hardball world, son. We've got to try to keep our heads until this peace craze blows over. Joker: Aye aye, sir. Bot Last edited by Botnst; 06-13-2004 at 03:12 PM. |
