What's your taste in music?
 

A comment of MM's in another thread suggested this might be interesting.

Is your taste in music explained by your age? Mine probably is. I like The Doors, Pink Floyd (early stuff), The Rolling Stones, and, of course, Led Zeppelin.

Frankly, virtually all of the current 'music' I've been exposed to sounds like a repetitive advertisment jingle, at one end of the scale, or moronic and agressive at the other (rap). Should I get out more?

FWIW, I'm in my early 20's, and I agree with you completely. I've actually felt that way about modern music for nearly all of my life. I got interested in "classic" rock when I was 15 or so, and before that primarily listened to '40's big band. :)

Favorites include Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, Cream, the Beatles, Deep Purple, and Queen.

This is going to start sounding like an old hippie reunion:D I like old rock from the 50s, 60s and early 70s. Having said that I also love old country. Hank rules. Cowboy music is another favorite, Yee Haw. Also give me some Bluegrass.

I am in my mid thirties and my tastes range from classic rock to alternative music from now-a-days. Though, once in awhile disco and the 1980´s new wave music reminds me of good time!! Some of my favorites:

Warden, that's no surprise - I knew your were a man of exceptional taste and sophistication already ;) And how could I have forgotten The Beatles? David Bowie, Blondie. Or is that nearly 'going up to eleven'?

But surely there must be some modern bands worth listening to, even for older farts like myself?

The most modern rock band I can handle is U2. Hank died not to long after I was born. Damn that was a long time ago:D

at 27(!), but I like to think I like a bit of everything (my wife says I'm a music snob)- from techno to classical and most points inbetween, with the exceptions being most country and western (exception being Cash) and modern R&B. Oh, and all those "I'm very angry at the world 'cause I'm white and still live with my mum at 25" type-shouty bands :)

Most of my current favourites would probably have all you old-hippie types grumbling, but reading from the 'favs' shelf would include Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, Air, Grandaddy, Beck, Eels, Wilco, REM, Underworld, Aphex Twin, Gershwin, MSP, Tom Waits, Sparklehorse, Pixies and Massive Attack to name but a few.

I'm also not adverse to a bit of classic rock/punk, namely the Doors, Clash, Sex Pistols, Psychedelic Furs, Lennon, Zep, Beatles & Beach Boys. Bowie is doing some of his best work at the moment too.

I could go on and on...

I think modern radio and MTV makes it very difficult for good new bands to get exposure. Instead all you hear is either classic rock (same old tracks repeated ad naseum) or bad manufactured pop. Still it's the people who listen to that who appease the advertisers.

First and foremost The Clash and on the other end Springsteen plus classical, big band and Reggae. I all depends on the mood.

Bob Marley, James Brown, U2, Tupac, Snoop, Dre, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queen, Jimi Hendrix, Beastie Boys....

Most of my favorite musicians die of drug overdose or complications of drinking or in jail.

In other words, I like blues.

I also like rock n roll from my druggie days, ending about Bowie.

Also, I like baroque chamber music. My favorite instrument is the violin and my violinist was Isaac Stern. I am really beginning to enjoy a little Japanese girl named Midori, I think. A friend gave me a ripped copy of a Mozart concerto and having admitted that (!) I now have to go buy it.

Oh, a plug for Mike. DoubleDrive reminds me of music I worshiped in my misspent youth, mentioned previously. Demanding, insolent, and accomplished, you better crank it up, cheres.

I haven't listened to anything but classical for about 10 years. Favorites are Beethoven, Debussy, Shubert, Scarlatti (SP?) and Bach. When I listened to the other stuff it was Neil Young, Dire Straits...main stream. I'm 45 so I started classical young - don't know why either, just did.:rolleyes:

ahhh and I forgot to mention Bowie, I always have changes one or two in the cd changer.

Heroes, is my anthem.

I love going to opera. Opera is like the melting pot for the arts. Theater, music, poetry, acting, dance, and design.

I'll listen to most classical music up to Stravinsky, but my favourites are like big and heavy orchestral works like Romeo and Juliet or Smetana's Ma Vlast. I especially like listening, baton in hand, with a glass of single malt scotch in hand. And loud. Very loud.

I also love straight ahead jazz. Don't quite like the "fusion" stuff, too many notes sometimes gets on my nerves. OK I dig classic Miles, Dexter Gordon, Coltrane... Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson. Lately I've been listening to Brad Mehldau's Art of the Trio.. kinda artsy jazz if there's ever a word to describe it. Hell I like it all.

Then there's 70's rock. I love that stuff. I must have like a five hundred LP's. Great stuff to throw on the 'table when teenagers are around. They dig the stuff.
