My friend is looking into the above car... any tips I can help him with? Weakpoints? Just seeing if anyone has any familiarity with this model.

why is friend in quotation? I would never even consider owning a Chrysler, beside a 300C. Helping out a friend who wants to upgrade from his POS early 90's pontiac sunbird.

Snibble, how about a Buick? Your friend could get a LeSabre for a pretty good price. Plenty of room and power, good gas mileage too. Or, if he wants something sportier, maybe a Regal GS or Park Avenue Ultra, or even an Olds 88 LSS.

I think he's done with Buick for good... he had another POS Buick, I think a Skylark.... and it had the the front axle rust off and leaving him stranded on a bridge with both wheels hang off the car. He has vowed never to own a Buick ever again.

Tell him to only buy it if he plans on trading it in before it gets too many miles on it. Our '96 Cirrus was a decent car up until about 60k or so. POS after that. They don't hold up. Also, he might want to check on how well his local dealer does as far as service goes. Check around for it's reputation. The dealer we bought ours from was a lousy place, and I later found out they had a terrible reputation. We eventually went to one twice as far away. Chrysler dealers have a very spotty track record for standing behind their cars.

Geez, you guys really hate Chrysler, don't you?

I think Rick actually had it right when he said "spotty"...there are some dealers out there with a bad reputation, and there are also many dealers that have an excellent reputation. Chrysler dealers aren't alone in this, though; that goes for every make I can think of (yes, even the "mighty" Toyota has its share of bad dealers).

Re: the Sebring, a former aunt (by marriage, and she left my uncle a year ago) has either an '00 or an '01 Sebring, and has been really happy with it. Also, a friend of mine was looking seriously at getting a Sebring a few years ago, and was seriously leaning in that direction before I convinced him to get a truck (he now has a '99 Dodge Dakota that he's very happy with). He didn't readily find anything wrong with them.

I wouldn't buy one myself, although that's mainly due to the fact that I refuse to own any gasoline-powered vehicle, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend that someone NOT buy one. That said, the VW TDi has decent power and is real miserly on the fuel

I feel my hatred for Chryslers products has been well earned

While I've owned several older Chrysler products(from the 60's and 70's) and been very happy with them, I got stung with that Cirrus. And I hear repeat experiences from many sources. The dealer I traded it in at a few weeks ago barely wanted the thing, even though it was in other wise decent shape.

Remember my freind's cirrus I told you about? Same.

I dont know about the Sebring...its a nice looking car but basically the same as the cirrus which was unreliable.

As for Chrysler, personally I would still buy one because yeah they might have a few more problems(certain models) but our Jeep has now 250 000kms and its amazing....we actually had less problems with that than our 126 and the Jeep was always rated poorly.

To me Chrysler is all about chance and luck. Yes the dealers are spotty aswell.

Yes, there's a good example. Mark and I compared horror stories a year or so ago, (he has a friend with a Cirrus too) and we both had similar stories to tell. The only thing mine lacked was a blown trannie, and was one of the big reasons for dumping it before I had to spend another $2200 on it for that.
One of the fellas at my local NAPA store has a '99 Cirrus, and loves it. I asked him how many miles he had on it, and seems he said somewhere around 80k. Maybe, just maybe, they've improved. I do know they went to a thicker front brake rotor, eliminating the warped-brake-rotor-every-30k-miles syndrome.
I suppose they're not much worse than alot of cars out there. But once bitten, twice smart for me.

I dont speak to the freind that has it (long story) but I see it at school and its missing all the hubcaps and is dirty aswell as the key stuck in the trunk keyhole:p so I dont know anymore about it.

His was a 95 so probably in 99-2000 they improved. If they ran like a benz then they would be very nice cars cause they are decent looking.

We were actually shopping for an LHS when we ended up with the Cirrus. Glad we didn't get the LHS, as I've heard more bad stories about those models.

I know my choice was swayed by wanting something some what comfortable, along with front wheel drive. We don't get all that much snow out here, but when we do it's sloppy and slippery(wet snow and slush). Put that with the hilly country side, and front or 4 wheel drive is about the best way to get around. So we keep the Benz parked during bad weather. It sucks in the snow, even with decent tires on it.
So now we have the Subaru and Audi for daily drivers, the Benz as a weekend cruiser.
