I just bought a PowerBook G4, so I use iTunes.

It is a really cool program. I have so far copied about 55 albums to my harddrive in AAC format (mpeg4) at 256kbps. I have used about 6gigs of space (about 6 megs per song).

I have so far burned several mix CDs, made awesome playlists, transfered my collection to my iPod, listened for hours as I work on the computer.

iTunes is so easy to use. I pop in a CD, it automatically grabs the track and artist names online, and copies the album to my hard drive in damn-near CD quality sounds in about 7 minutes.

Apple makes really easy to use, full featured products. It is a much more hollistic approch to hardware and software design.

iTunes is available for the PC, too!

A program called "grip" is what I use to put my CDs onto my hard drive (CDs will get scratched and go bad at some point, and CD drives get too dirty from playing CDs all the time). It needs the GNOME libraries but you don't have to actually be running GNOME to use it. Also, it used CDParanoia and Lame to do the ripping and encoding. grip does automatic lookups, partial tracks, etc, and gives you a playlist. Very nice, and free.

I use Musicmatch Jukebox on my Windows machine. Like a lot of programs, it comes in the "Basic" and the "Plus" versions. Basic is fine, but gives you a mildly irritating "please upgrade" screen whenever you exit. Plus costs $20, and has a few more features. FWIW, MusicMatch is the software Apple gives you with the iPod for Windows (iTunes is only on the Mac). Get it at www.musicmatch.com.

i use this program called dbPowerAmp's (surprise) Music Converter program

it uses the Lame program to convert and from what I've read its supposed to be the most accurate

another thing u could do is use the following services that will rip the music for u and store it onto a dvd, cd, HD, or mp3 player

i think it costs like between $140 & 250 (wired mag jun 2004 p36)
