tried smoking when i was a wee one (6 or so) my heaving chest, breathlessness and coughing convinced me to never try again.

i dont drink either. dont like the taste. and hiding the taste with a soda or something (rum and coke etc) is cheating IMO. i figure if it tastes bad, my body doesnt want it, so dont ingest it.

One week from today will mark 12 years since I quit smoking tobacco. In the good ol’ days I burned up to 3 packs of Camel Filters on a busy day. Loved visiting selected friends because they smoked Camel straights and would let me swap them for Camel Filters, Shermans or 3 Castles.

Even though i quit 12 years ago, gosh, wonder if cigs had anything to do with my heart disease?

Naah. It was the Snickers bars and Pop Tarts........................................ cough cough

I have been smoking cigarettes since i was 8. (that would be for 27 years)
I'm in great physical shape. I exercise 3-4 times a week and are able to outrun most of my friends that has never smoked.
I have never had the morning cough.

So, except for the nasty smell, i simply can't find a good reason to quit the smokes.

I'd rather live for 60 years, enjoying my life and my smokes, than live for 75 years while denying myself that pleasure..

Hopefully as a visitor and not a patient. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but to deny the health risks of nicotine is just ignorant. Might a well play Russian roulette. Wonder how many people in the cancer wards and on O2 are saying ... "damn that was fun .. Let’s do it again".

Never smoked, told my girlfriend (now wife) that smoking was a deal breaker. Either she quit or she could keep walking. She quit. Every now and then she breaks down while at a party and has one. it pisses me off and she knows it but we have an understanding. If it gets out of hand, I leave. I told her point blank that I will not, under any circumstances visit her in a cancer ward or see her in an O2 tent.

Her sister in law smokes and has 2 small children. Her husband chews tobacco.

It's strange how some people seem almost immune to tobacco while others get taken down by it just like that. My dad smoked for about fifteen years, mostly before I was born, and so far hasn't shown any negative affects.
For my part, I love a good cigar, but have no desire to make it a daily habit. I'll smoke a cigar every now and then, usually a couple times a month, but it hasn't resulted in any cravings in the three years I've been doing it. I must not be easily addicted.
One thing I can't stand, by the way, is the taste of alcohol. I've had a little wine, a little champagne, and not liked either at all. I've never tried beer, the smell alone drives me away. The thing that annoys the heck out of me is how you can't listen to radio anymore without hearing "If you don't talk to your kids about smoking." You hear about it more than drugs or alcohol, let alone promiscuity/STDs, etc. I'm not tobacco advocate, but I get sick and tired of hearing all that while it seems that the beer companies can practically get away with murder.

I for one, am defintely not in denial. It's a calculated risk. -Like taking your car on the road.. You KNOW someone will get hurt or killed in traffic today. You just hope it won't be you.. And it doesn't keep you from doing it. Right?

Howdy Freestyler,
When you get in a car or get on a motorcycle you can still do things to protect yourself. When you light up a cig. you throw all that protection away. I was talking to one of the security guards at work who smoked for 30 years and quit about 20 years ago. He said he can't believe how bad people stink and he is enbarassed to think that is how he smelled. He says he likes the taste of food also

I don't smoke but I do enjoy chewing tobacco. My Dad on the other hand has smoked since he was 10. He started out smoking corn silk and hand rolled cigs, graduated to Lucky Strike Green in WWII then settled into a steady diet of Camel unfiltered. Has been a 2-3 pack a day smoker as long as I can remember. Now 80 years old and luckily no health problems.

I think we are some of the lucky ones that have no nicotine related health issues. I started chewing tobacco at the ripe old age of 13 and have done so for near 32 years. I have had no health issues and still have all my teeth. I am considering giving it up, but mostly because of the cost. Tobacco was $.17 a can when I started, it's now about $6.00 on average. A can usually lasts me a couple three days (I have cut way back from my high use of 2 cans a day when doodlebugging). Some of the studies I've read show chewing tobacco provide 20 times the nicotine than cigarettes do, so I'd probably have to use a box of patches at a time.

It's my vice.

my mother has smoked two packs a day for 45 years. It finally caught up to her on Mother's day. She went into the hospital by ambulance, unable to breath and swollen around her stomach and chest. Diagnoses is congestive heart failure, complicated by emphesema (sp?) and diabetes. She has been off and on a respirator, off and on the bipap machines, and has gone into cardiac arrest once since she's been in the hospital. She's been in a month now and has been in and out of the CCU twice. If she makes it through without any more mishaps we are looking at another few months of rehabilitation in a long term care facility before she can come home, and then i will have to find a nurse to be with her when i am at work. She is only 63 years old.

I have smoked a pack a day for 20 years. I am very stressed right now with mother's hospitalization and up-and-down progress, so i am not quiting like tomorrow or anything, but yes, i will be quitting.

on occassion I will enjoy a cigar, but never cigrettes. Guess it's something I picked up from my dad. I find smokeless tabbaco very hard to quit and found a food product knock off with the same affects I know it's bad for you but for some reason it caught on to me.

Yep, I smoke cigars. I'll quit when I don't enjoy them anymore. And I like the designated smoking areas on the beach. Too much litter for too long from smokers.
Cannabis too. Maui's number one cash crop. Smoked it for 40 years now and it's never affected,
never affected,
never affected........
Damn, lost my train of thought. Maybe there are still some donuts left, eh?
Next week let's talk about taking LSD and going to Magic Mountain.

NO!

Never have, never will. It's one of the most vile, revolting habits a person can have.
