Howdy All,
Here is a little history. Hot rodding got its start on the dry lakes of Southern California. They would come up from the L.A. area to Muroc dry lake which is on Edwards Air Force Base and here at El Mirage. Southern California Timing Association still has time trials on El Mirage dry lake once a month through the summer.

Back when I first started driving my cousin and I were big into Subaru's. (we both still drive them) On our old ones we used to find the cannister for the gas evap and stencil large letters onto them. So when someone opened the hood it would read
"RICE CONVERTOR"

Or.....as a neighbor's kid down the street did:

Get an M3, slap a bad set of rims on it and a fart can, and pretend you are a "ricer"...

Hey now. I resemble that remark. My wife's slightly modified 1997 Impreza is anything but a ricer. It has stock mechanicals, which, IMHO, are as reliable and durable as any gas-powered Mercedes. It has a Prodrive suspension kit (Bilstein struts with Eibach springs), a stiffer rear sway bar, a rigid sway bar link at each corner, 16" WRX wheels with Bridgestone Potenza Pole Position summer tires, and 15" steel wheels with all-seasons for the winter months. Prodrive is the same company that builds the factory WRC rally cars. Their street suspension kits have a reputation for being very well sorted. I got the suspension kit for handling, but it also lowered the car about an inch. I have to admit, the slight lowering gives the car a cool look. I have yet to have any ground clearance problems. The car is a blast to drive in all conditions, and it is a total beast on dirt roads. Turn it into a corner, juice it, and it slides through pretty as you please. For all-out handling on dry pavement, I would probably prefer a RWD car, but I make no apologies for the Subie. Excellent, unique design. Reliability second only to Toyota.

I resemble that remark...

I wouldn't call that "ricing." Ricing is performing modifications solely for the purpose of appearence. Sure F1 and Indy cars have big wings on the back. But then they are rear-drive and are actually capable of the speeds at which they come into play; most Civics are not. Now, a slighly lowered Civic with some real suspension tuning and engine work I can respect. But I refuse to take seriously someone who puts a 5" exhaust tip on a car that otherwise has 2" piping. Most of those things literally sound like a lawn mower with their funky mufflers. Four cylinders, no matter how loud they scream, will never have the authority of a V8.
What I don't understand though, is how so many people can be so tasteless. They put a big, ugly, and certainly not aerodynamic spoiler on (sometimes with more than one wing), a huge 18-20" set of wheels that do nothing more than cost a lot of money and kill any ride quality the car once had, they put on "euro" tailights (hey buddy, you wanna see cool taillights? My Fairlane has them, your Accord does not), do a hackjob on the interior to put in huge subwoofers and enough lights to land a 747, and then somehow convince themselves they've got a great car.
And never mind that detroit iron will blow away any ricer, no matter how good, at 1/4 the cost. You can buy an old Lincoln for $1000 and have a driveline (although not a car, but there are plenty good candidates there too) you could build a 10-second car off of. I guess that's just not "cool" anymore.

That reminds me of a guy that straight-piped a '96 Ford Ranger 4-banger. Put an echo-tip on it too (not a can, but a fat tip.). I had just recently re-built a 3.5HP Briggs & Stratton on my then 15yr old lawnmower, and the two were nearly indestinguishable. He thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Is that enough lights to land a 747 from a 747 fuselage, or enough lights to supply a landing strip?

No kidding. I distinctly recall my '83 Buick doing 130-140mph with more left in the pedal, doing it like it was stretching its legs. It absolutely loathed the city though. Caught its 2nd wind about 75, and never stopped after that.

And that was before I rebuilt the carburetor. Stock everything, except for new OEM shocks.

I'll bet that peer pressure and the whole "Everybody's doing it" factor comes into play here in a major way. I suppose that anything's possible, but I have a bit of trouble believing that that many people can be that tasteless.

Let 'em have their fun...while I blow black diesel smoke into their windows

Would that be LAX, O'Hare, or Heathrow?

It's cool. I guess we are not as cool driving our fast, awsome handling, German cars.

What's the thing with these little cars? I drove a 2001 Honda Civic and an 04 Jetta 1.8T; their not that nice. I remember thinking how I could buy a 500E or a nice S420 for what the Jetta cost. Frankly I thought my Camry could take the Jetta, you had to rev the piss out of it, for it to go.

I just read somewhere the impreza was at the top of the lemon list....

I love the ricers, without them, nobody would race and then lose to me. I can only beat the americans on the freeway and even then only sometimes.
