Death and Dying

How do you feel about death?

How do you view death and the afterlife or lack there of?

There are life cycle theorists that believe that as a person grows older he/she may begin to accept death as a part of life. The person may begin to embrace death more than fear it. What do you think about this? Do you have any experience with this?

PS. I am looking for replies that discuss dealing with death and dying rather than the religious asspects of it.

KirkVining 06-18-2004 10:29 PM

Well, if you didn't want religion, you might have skipped the word "afterlife". You'll be sorry.

Myself, I'm a scientific guy. The only way to defeat death is thru science, which is our only hope of living longer. I don't think there is much after it is over except dirt and worms. Howewver, even scientifically, there is room for hope that there could be more. The first law of thermodynamics states that energy is neither created or destroyed, it just changes state, and we may not be aware of all the states it can assume, knowing only those that exist in our 3D box we call reality . If there is some ethereal essence of energy, a soul if you will, that we consist of, perhaps it passes thru the other dimensions that Einstein has predicted exist and we somehow are recreated or transcended into something new. It truly is the mystery of all time. I think those who are totally convinced there is no god and those totally convinced there is are not afraid of dying. those in the middle are scared ****less.

Since death is inevitable for the present time, we're all dying from birth.

Over the course of our "lives" billions upon billions of our cells will have expired in a continuing cycle of creation and dying.

By definition, death is irreversible.

Without death, could there be evolution?

GermanStar 06-18-2004 10:36 PM

In general, I'm against it...

Its our genes that live forever. We're just a bag that carries them. When its time for our genes to take out the garbage, we're the garbage bag.

Last time I came back as a rutabaga. Now I'm a botanist. I believe in improvement.

Next time I'll be an M-B mechanic and people will worship me.

LOL @ MTI and Germanstar!

I must say that what Kirk said was very interesting to me and much like how see things. That said, I have to admit that I am "scared ****less of dying". The only way I deal at all with the inevitability of death is through denial. I think it is just depressing to think we live our whole lives just to die at the end. Also, I can't bear to think about missing my family forever but I guess if I am dead I may not feel anything anymore. Death sucks. :(

KirkVining 06-18-2004 11:41 PM

You should be. One of those added dimensions could be Hell, or even worse, full of lawyers. Not that I'm worried. Well, maybe just a little. ok, I'm scared ****less.

GermanStar 06-18-2004 11:49 PM

Frankly, none of this really matters. The more it's in your head, the worse off you are. You can't anticipate what you can't imagine. Just adhere to a life of dedicated hedonism and don't sweat the small stuff.

Howdy All,
Is it death you fear or is it pain and suffering ?¿

I don't know if your question is directed at me or someone else but I will answer. What I fear is death, the end of my life (or someone else's). The end of all that I know and am familiar with. This life is full of people that are so dear to me and the thought of leaving them is extremely depressing. I don't believe in a hell so that is not my concern. Death is full of uncertainty and I like the way "life" works although it is cruel at times. But it is scarey to think of death because we don't know happens after death or even worse yet what if there is nothing after death. Not to mention all the time you spend building your life with a career and relationships only to die at the end. It starts to make me wonder sometimes why we exist at all. I could go on and on but it will freak me out.

I agree. All life is sacred. :)

One main reason I don't want to die.

This is my 14-month-old daughter:

Howdy Sway,
Just a question to everyone.
