Strange request?

My mother used to own a benz...it was an '88 560 sl. She died shortly after buying it. I was wondering what ever became of the car (Dad had to sell it). I've got the vin number. How might I find out without buying carfax?

Every now and then, television stations offer free carfax report, just keep your eyes peeled for these offers, sometimes in different states, and run the VIN.

The report won't tell you who owns the car, just where it was last reported registered.

A P.I. or attorney can find it for you if they have the right kind of info services.
