Angry stolen computer, house broken into

My house was burglerized about a week ago. They took my stereo system, 32" TV, and computer system. About $8k worth of equipment total. To make matters worse, all of my backup cd's of music, programs, and pictures were also taken. That is what really pi$$es my off. Of course the police aren't of much help. I made a list of everything taken with serial numbers and some pictures and gave them to all the local pawn shops. Does anyone know of a way to track a stolen computer if, by chance, someone hooks mine up to the internet? Microsoft is of no help as far as this goes. My internet provider hasn't called me back on this matter yet (Bellsouth). Sorry this is so long, but maybe someone has some advice. Thanks, John.

Do you have a username and password set up on the Internet login that is automatic? As long as your bills paid and you haven't killed the connection, the theives would have no trouble using it and your ISP would know if it was on line. Problem is ISP's pretty much require a court order to do anything, so you'd have to get an attorney to force them. Before you went thru the expense, you should try to figure out if the ISP id's source dialup numbers and logs them. Most of them don't except when specifically ordered to by a court as well. You will quickly eat up your 8K loss in atty fees.

yeah but its amazing how stupid they are. Here in Houston, a crook pulled out his wallet like he was going to buy something, and then pulled his gun. He left his wallet on the counter. The cops said they just drove over to the guys house, and arrested him while he was counting the money on the kitchen table.

Another guy burned his wife and house down at the same time, and the FD arson investigators ruled the fire accidental, caused by the wife's cigarette fallen on the rug. Later, an insurance investigator going thru the wreckage discovered a shopping list on the guys work letterhead: Acetone, cigarette lighter, pack of Virginia Slims etc. They tested for acetone and popped the guy.
