Cosby strikes again!

I tend to think Bill Cosby is a bit self-righteous about a lot of things, but here he is SPOT-ON!

_______________

CHICAGO — Bill Cosby went off on another tirade against the black community Thursday, telling a room full of activists that black children are running around not knowing how to read or write and "going nowhere."

He also had harsh words for struggling black men, telling them: "Stop beating up your women because you can't find a job."

Cosby made headlines in May when he upbraided some poor blacks for their grammar and accused them of squandering opportunities the civil rights movement gave them. He shot back Thursday, saying his detractors were trying in vain to hide the black community's "dirty laundry."

"Let me tell you something, your dirty laundry gets out of school at 2:30 every day, it's cursing and calling each other n------ as they're walking up and down the street," Cosby said during an appearance at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition & Citizenship Education Fund's annual conference.

"They think they're hip," the entertainer said. "They can't read; they can't write. They're laughing and giggling, and they're going nowhere."

In his remarks in May at a commemoration of the anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education desegregation decision, Cosby denounced some blacks' grammar and said those who commit crimes and wind up behind bars "are not political prisoners."

"I can't even talk the way these people talk, 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... and I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk," Cosby said then. "And then I heard the father talk ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth."

Cosby elaborated Thursday on his previous comments in a talk interrupted several times by applause. He castigated some blacks, saying that they cannot simply blame whites for problems such as teen pregnancy and high school dropout rates.

"For me there is a time ... when we have to turn the mirror around," he said. "Because for me it is almost analgesic to talk about what the white man is doing against us. And it keeps a person frozen in their seat, it keeps you frozen in your hole you're sitting in."

Cosby lamented that the racial slurs once used by those who lynched blacks are now a favorite expression of black children. And he blamed parents.

"When you put on a record and that record is yelling `n----- this and n----- that' and you've got your little 6-year-old, 7-year-old sitting in the back seat of the car, those children hear that," he said.

He also condemned black men who missed out on opportunities and are now angry about their lives.

"You've got to stop beating up your women because you can't find a job, because you didn't want to get an education and now you're (earning) minimum wage," Cosby said. "You should have thought more of yourself when you were in high school, when you had an opportunity."

Cosby appeared Thursday with the Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder and president of the education fund, who defended the entertainer's statements.

"Bill is saying let's fight the right fight, let's level the playing field," Jackson said. "Drunk people can't do that. Illiterate people can't do that."

Cosby also said many young people are failing to honor the sacrifices made by those who struggled and died during the civil rights movement.

"Dogs, water hoses that tear the bark off trees, Emmett Till," he said, naming the black youth who was tortured and murdered in Mississippi in 1955, allegedly for whistling at a white woman. "And you're going to tell me you're going to drop out of school? You're going to tell me you're going to steal from a store?"

Cosby also said he wasn't concerned that some whites took his comments and turned them "against our people."

"Let them talk," he said.

It's too bad that the audience that needs to hear his words the most, will be the ones who refuse to listen.

I read that and forwarded it to my Dad. I think he's right on the money as well.

You have read my rants on several threads when someone spouts off about the level playing field that minorities enjoy with whites...

...in this case, I believe Bill points out the shortcomings of an uneasy trend among many African-Americans...not that this is the norm, but unfortunately, this is what the media will make light of.

I have to set the record straight with my impressionable young daughter when she bounces and sings tunes from a host of rappers who glorify the "pimp gangsta" lifestyle and refer to young women as "B"s and "ho"s!

Soon, I have to deal with young impressionable males who have embraced this culture, and think they would be able to get away with disrespecting my daughter like that!

Unfortunately, Bill's comments will serve to just anger those folks who believe their actions attest to "keepin it real"!

Again, he was just making light of a serious issue that there are a large number of African-Americans who don't have a clue...but for those of us who do, we know he will be looked at as completely out of touch with "da hood"!

I've heard that black kids tease other black kids who do well in school as "selling out" and "trying to be white".

Since when is doing well in school "trying to be white"?

If they said "trying to be Asian", then I'd understand.... j/k lol

I completely agree with you, bro....and I mean no offense, but PLEASE drop the "African American" thing....that is one of my biggest pet peeves.

We are all AMERICAN-AMERICANS. All this hyphenated-ism just breeds more divisiveness. According to your profile, you're from TEXAS, not Africa.....

I'm not an Irish-, German-, Native-, Dutch-, Mutt- American....I'm just a damn American.

Mike, I doubt very much that you've grown up under the ongoing legacy of enslavement and subjugation, therefore you don't see any reason to think of yourself as a member of a separate sub-group within this country. Race as a classification is a silly social construct, but nevertheless it's still socially relevent to any discussion of American culture, given our disgraceful history of racism. It will remain relevent as long as black and brown skinned Americans continue to lag behind all the pertinent social, income and incarceration indicators. Until there's a level playing field for all Americans to achieve their highest level of inate growth and prosperity, we'll be required to hold onto these arcane racial and ethnic classifications.

The fabulously wealthy Cosby should be decrying the existence and prevelence of widespread poverty and ignorance in America, rather than singling out one race as his negative exemplar. Poverty and ignorance are not the exclusive provenance of one race, rather it is a geographically and racially diverse phenomena representing America's dirty little secret. And, disturbingly, I see no end to the trend toward expanding the negative consequences of this phenomena either, Cosby's vocal handwringing notwithstanding.

Yep, I started that one too. But that was a discussion about the FIRST time Cosby talked about the subject. This is the SECOND time he has.

On the contrary: I have MANY reasons to consider myself a member of a "separate sub-group", as you say, yet I do not whine about it, nor do I use it as an excuse for anything.

Various kinds of racism and discriminations have existed almost since humans have existed. It is hardly uniquely American, and it is not going to completely go away any time soon.

How long are people going to use the "unlevel playing field" as an excuse? How long are other people going to help them perpetuate it? If you don't think the playing field is level, then DO SOMETHING to level it, besides whining and expecting someone ELSE to do something FOR you!

I think Cosby makes an EXCELLENT point, and he could not be any more correct in his observations. If a young black man wants to be respected and gainfully employed and get somewhere in this society, he is NOT going to do so by skipping school and standing on a seedy street corner in baggy pants and a XXXL-size Tupac shirt with a cell phone to his ear, speaking English like it's his second language, and yelling "yo" and "beeeaatch" and "ho" and "ni**a" at every passerby.

Yes, Cosby is "fabulously wealthy". How do you think he GOT that way? He is intelligent, responsible, speaks English like he actually went to school, and developed and marketed a skill that there was a demand for.

He made something of himself, while others just made excuses.

You've obviously convinced youself that you've got it all figured out, so I suggest that you hit the motivational lecture circuit so that you too can become fabulously wealthy while berating poor ignorant fools. It's a growth industry I hear...

Never thought of myself as a "motivational speaker", but it would certainly beat WHINING, wouldn't it!?!?!

The only obstacles that matter are the ones that you recognize and ALLOW to be in your way.

I've had many factors "working against me" in my life, but you and others here have heard practically nothing about it, because I'm busy DOING something with my life instead of making EXCUSES about how hard it is to overcome those factors. I DON'T CARE what factors are working against me. I care about what I can DO about it.

I'm very, very, very, very, very, very, VERY SICK of peoples' excuses.

I make it a point to make none.

Mike

Why do you guys all agree with him and feel black kids are stupid? I have so many fellow law students that are black and its always a treat to listen to them talk in class, so full of knowledge just like everyone else in my classes. You guys need to reconsider whether or not you agree with Cosby, I certainly do not.

This article refers to his "speech" commerating the anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education in May. The same speech Botnst was talking about a while back. Anyway, whatever. Talk about full circle. Someone with another pet peeve needs to come on here and get people riled up over something else.

Yo! G, yo daughter talk like dat?

He should have talked about all the dumb white trash here in Cincinnati too. They talk like hee-haws from the farm, swearing every sentence and spitting all the time. Its not a color thing, people.

OK, time to chime in here, and I'll probably piss off several people in the process, but oh well, politically correct mode is outta here on this one.

Z, Cosby isn't singling out the black population. The reality is, that it's the black population that is doing all of the screaming and hollering about being treated unfairly. It's also the black population that is the source of a majority of the crime in this country. As Cosby IS black as well, it's fair game that he's using his own as an example. If you're going to ***** about your neighbours trashed yard, and your own yard is a mess, you will stand to have this problem brought to your attention. Guess whose responsibility it's going to be to "fix the problem." No, it won't be me, no mater how oppressive of a government you want to hang over me. Cosby is living proof of the reality that applying yourself to your max will reap great rewards, regardless of skin colour. The man IS rich, IS educated, AND worked HARD to get to where he is today. He deserves every last bit of the rewards that he's reaped.

I also agree with MM. The hyphenated names are nothing more than a call to deepen the racial divide. The reality is that the government WANTS this racial divide to exist. The masses are too busy fighting with each other over the moronically stupid issue of skin colour to notice what the government is up to, and the government likes it this way, both to keep the masses relatively unaware of what's going on behind those closed doors, AND to keep the race card alive as a ploy to con the public's vote.

DTM, black kids aren't stupid. However, when you see these street punks pretending to be gang members and thugs, and dressing like they just crawled out of the dumpster this morning, they are going to deserve the negative connotation that they are actively seeking to portray. The example you showed is proof that these people are FAR better than this. However, THEY need to clean up their own doorstep. To ***** and moan constantly isn't gonig to fix anything. It isn't mine, nor anybody else's job to "help them out." Equal opportunity means that you are equally able to be either accepted, or rejected based on how you present yourself, as well as your credentials. Nobody "owes" them a damn thing.
