Anyone with Audi A8 experience here?

I'm thinking of buying an Audi A8. Both because i believe it's a great car to drive and because filthy expensive cars tend to depricate very fast. I can now get a '96 A8 with 50K miles and in pristine condition for 1/4 of the price when it was new. (new price in Denmark in '96: $219000)

I could of course find a Audi-forum (and i will), but i thought i would ask the good people of this forum now that i am here..

Is a mid-90's A8 outrageously expensive to maintain? (compared to a Benz for example?)
Is there anything out of the ordinary you want to look for when shopping for this car?

TIA

I also thought about it a few years ago but was concern about the depreciation cost, which I think is quite drastic and may therefore be reflective of its poor performance or expense for its upkeep.

Compared to..?

In a 2-year period i have spent a little over $9000 in repairs on my 300E (not counting the auto tranny rebuild i need), while it has depricated more than 40% in the same period..

Can the A8 possibly be worse than that?

One thing for sure they are one of the best looking cars on the road.

Keep in mind, in the world of INTERNET, you will be hard to find an honest / unbiased answer to questions like that... especially in a Mercedes Forum.;)

Mercedes forums says AUdi and BMW are costly.

Go to BMW forum, roadfly, and BMW's are maintainance free compared to "expensive to maintain MB"

go to Yugo forum, "these are the best cars on the road, no one understands them"

go to Ford forum...... well, they're hopeless, just an Ameican car, lol

Get my point? You will have to go to an Audi forum and search how busy their Tech section is ...... Audi is a division of VW... I have had a 97 and a 99 VW with little problems.... I know in the past, past, past AUdi's were junk... newer years, I don't know..

Just as an FYI, when I bought my 95 E320 recently, I entertained A4's, but got scared off when I read of some expensive tranny problems. I did NOT probe further to find out what years / issues they had. just dropped the choice...

Good luck

I guess you have a point. -And proved it too. (MB's have tranny problems too you know. You can read all about it on the BMW forums) ;)
