21 to get a room at a hotel?

Whats the idea of having to be atleast 21 for a hotel to give you a room to sleep in? I came back from Europe alone a couple of days ago from a flight back from hell. First there was a drunk guy running up and down the aisle when the plane was trying to land... he had to be restrained. This caused a delay. Then later on my flight was canceled so I was rerouted.

I then made it to Cincinatti... and find out that my flight to Columbus was really on "stand by"(thanks for telling me this before hand, dad! ). I was already up for atleast 24+ straight hours and was annoyed and didn't want to test my already bad chances with the stand-by. So I told them I will take the flight in the morning. I go outside the airport, make a call to one hotel( might get in trouble for using the name.. but lets just say its a known by everyone). They said there is a shuttle on its way and it will take 10mins. After waiting 30mins.. I said f^$&( it... I will go on the next shuttle I see to whatever hotel. I needed to sleep.. and a shower. Soon therafter a shuttle to a hotel comes... I jump in and go to the hotel. I arrive.. ask if its a problem that I didn't have a reservation. She said no. I gave my info, my credit card and was about to give me my key when she said if she could see my ID. I figured its because my card was not signed... but she only checked to see how old i was. She tells me that she can't give me a room because I am not 21 ( I am 20). I tell her she's got to be kidding me. It was around 11:45pm when I went into the hotel to get a room. I tell her listen... I have been up for a long time, tired, dirty and need a place to sleep. I had cash if they were afraid my card is bad/stolen or whatever. So lucky me had to walk my tired ass 1/2 mile to another hotel. Luckily he didn't ask for an ID, and had a place to chill for the night. Moral of the story is.... you're not considered an adult really untill you're 21; but they will tax you, send you off to die at 18.

Unfortunately that's the way the world turns....Hotels have to protect themselves from kids who rent a room for a "hotel trashing party".

On top of that, many hotels have alcohol in their refrigerators so you would have to be 21 years old, otherwise they loose their license to sell alcohol.

Sorry to hear your had a bad time. Iwent through that myself when I was younger. I got through it and I'm sure you will too. Now that I'm older, I sort of understand that policy.

That blows!
A related story:
My daughter gets married last summer. They take off for a honeymoon to some nice hotel. Get there, and couldn't get a room because they didn't have a credit card. Plenty of cash/debit card/checks, but no CC. Guess they want it for a damage deposit. Here she is still in her wedding dress, and they just shake their heads. Just happens to be some buisness man checking, hears what's going on, and gives the guy behind the counter his CC, and says "Here. It's their honeymoon for petes sake! "
Glad to see there are some really decent people in the world!

the 21 year age rule to protect the hotel from "punk asses" who trash rooms for fun would probably work with hotels that charge by the hour rather than by night I don't think spending well over $100 for one night, and going anywhere near the Cinci airport(there's NOTHING around except for the airport) would be in the best interest for those punk asses.

When I went down to Myrtle Beach last year with my friends, the hotel charged a deposit to my card. The deposit was refunded when everything checked out OK. I had no problem with that system, because it was understandable.

The least the hotel could have done was offer to take me a to hotel that would have let a person under the age of 21 sleep the night, after I told them my situation.

Geez.... legal stuff taking precedent over being reasonable....
That would make sense *IF* I were a minor.

Nope. 18. For everything except buying alcohol. There were no legal issues here, this strictly was a hotel saying that it would be better off completely eliminating a segment of the paying public. I only can assume that there have been so many costly problems that this makes financial sense. It still seems like a deposit would be a better way to handle it.
