Yes, but again thats still just a bunch of social issues, it's not economic. You can live in a dictatorship and as long as the economy is thriving most people will be happy enough just getting richer every day. China is a perfect case in point.

That's right. And it's not badly enough broken yet but Hanauers' observation is it's heading in that direction.

Yes, up to a point. What built America was not Capitalism but a mixture of capitalism and socialism (if you define socialism as big government spending) working in partnership within a mostly free market system founded on the rule of law.

The greatest period of prosperity in American history was from the 50's to the end of the 90's based on America's being able to benifet hugely from the second world war and the massive government investment in high tech industry that was required to win that.

WWII was the best thing that ever happened to America and there was a very long tail to that event which I think has finally played itself out.

There's nothing on the horizon to replace it. The US has no leaders worth a damm and a largely ignorant populace who don't get the new reality. Such a ship will likely just drift along buffeted by events until it founders on a hidden reef.

Except the reef aint all that hidden, as Hanauer highlighted in his essay.

- Peter.
The assumption is that the issues cannot coexist. A Black or Brown Person back in the 1960s was extremely less likely to have a Job let a lone a good one. So Social issues can and do mirror Economic issues.

During the above time while White Women could get Jobs they were limited in variety, potential and salary.

I don't believe this is true. I don't see any Socialism at all up till the 1900s and then very little after that. So what era do you think built the country?

I also don't see Communism as the same as Socialism and Communism actually only was threat to Capatilism because the Soviet Union actively pushed spreading Communism.

My View on this is different. I remember the lines at the Unemployment Office going around the Building 1.5 Time in 1974. To me that marked the begin of the local Economy spiraling down as far as a Blue Collar Worker goes. We simple started not to make Mechanical Things in the Los Angeles area.

It is not US Leaders in the Political sense that is picking the Meat off of the Bone. It is the Power Mongers behind the scenes controling the Political leaders that have no loyalty to the Country or the People and feel it is dead logical to be that way.

Since this was Economic. The other chance for a Revolution would have been during our Great Depression. It did not happen then either.

The next major change to affect the country and the world will be the spread of the autonomous vehicle. Eventually, it will virtually eliminate parking lots, traffic jams, accidents, the need for car insurance, and greatly reduce or even eliminate repairs to cars and reduce the overwhelming number of human maladies. In turn the cost of health insurance will plummet because millions less will get sick due to breathing a life time of polluted air or being hit by a vehicle.

Buildings will no longer need to have 75% or more of their land space for vehicle parking. Imagine the cost of your home if it did not require 1 or more garages and a driveway? That represents 10s of thousands less in building costs per home or apartment.

In fact, once autonomous vehicles take hold, they may reduce the number of vehicles by something like 75% or more. Because one vehicle will be able to service any number of people all day long rather than just an hour or two out of the day, there will be no practical use for a personal vehicle, except for service vehicles. Some will keep personal vehicles anyway. Most roadways will no longer be congested and due to that the need for roadway infrastructure and the taxes that support it will decline dramatically.

Vehicle production can be changed to being totally modular so that as a component reaches the end of its service life, another set of modules can be swapped in. As vehicles cease to be personal, there will be major cost incentives to do this. Where we now rebuild an engine or replace the vehicle, swapping a battery pack, electrical engines, or even new seats, will take its place.

There will be no more truck or cab drivers. Fire departments, which exist primarily to come to the aid of vehicle accidents, can be dramatically reduced. The idea of cops whose primary purpose is to clean up traffic related issues will come to nearly an end as with autonomous vehicles, speeding and traffic accidents will be all but eliminated. Even traffic regulating equipment will be vastly reduced. The end result is a massive reduction of taxes needed to support the infrastructure.

Just like the reduction of fire departments and po po stations, the vast medical infrastructure will be widely reduced due to the lack of collisions and pollutants that cause much of the disease culture experiences.

With the growth of battery powered vehicles and community nuclear power plants, such as hinted at by TeraPower and similar, the need for foreign oil, will all but disappear. Best of all, the 10s of millions of lbs. or more of pollutants that are spewed into the atmosphere will be dramatically reduced. As energy consuming technology improves, pollution will continue to decline.

Just as we no longer have ice men to deliver refrigerants, in time society will mostly move beyond the era of fossil fuels and human operated vehicles.

The advance of society became dependent on technology starting about the time that Elisha Graves Otis transformed the elevator into the first autonomous vehicle of sorts. Society will likely never reduce its reliance on technology. Historically as society eliminates one issue it ability to prosper in other areas always expands.

Just a holiday reverie.

Have a great 4th of July!

Or not. Or it was the beginning of the end.

Food prices are up 40-50% around here (in the last 2 years). At some point people who are actually paying for food will say, no more. Nearly 50% is on food stamps and don't notice.
