50 million * $150,000

Now that adds up to real money

Alexandra Elbakyan is a highbrow pirate in hiding. The 27-year-old graduate student from Kazakhstan is operating a searchable online database of nearly 50 million stolen scholarly journal articles, shattering the $10 billion-per-year paywall of academic publishers. Elbakyan has kept herself beyond the reach of a federal judge who late last year issued an injunction against her site, noting that damages could total $150,000 per article — a sum that Applied and Computational Harmonic Analysis, a journal in her database, could help calculate. But she is not hiding from responsibility.

Legally it sounds as if she is on shaky ground at best. What caught my eye is that in many cases tax payers are funding the research and then we have to pay to see the results. If I'm paying for it, not sure why a third party gets to make a profit off it and me.

Perhaps Kerry can shed some light on this.

So the academics hand over copyright to their research and aren't remunerated? No wonder they require their students buy their absurdly priced textbooks. Gotta make a buck somewhere.

Yup, basically. Publications generally don't have ads and can also pay for peer reviews, the money has to come from somewhere.

A lot of academics who publish their articles on professional networking sites get threatened by publishers until they take them down too. You write it and when they agree to publish it you sign over all the rights. You have to specifically make sure you're allowed to reproduce it on a "personal website" in order to keep it available to people.

This woman is kinda awesome if you ask me.

BTW, universities then pay out of the nose for access to these journals so that academics can read them, improve their own research, and then publish. The peer review process is very important, but apart from that the whole thing is a money printing machine.

Were they already paid to do the research in the first place?
