Most younger people have never heard of Auschwitz
Are some things better off forgotten?

that's kind of like saying let's forget the WTC. Glad to hear that such film is being made.... The awareness of such evil is a good thing especially in this day. Maybe more folks will see parallels between shrubster and that funny mustache man... |

Some things should never be forgotten so they are never repeated.
It dishonors both those killed and their surviving family members. Pretty pitiful that so many don't remember Auschwitz.

I'd like to see what the numbers are for the US. I wonder if the figure would be comparable, or better, or worse?
I know a sizable percentage of people polled in the US can't locate the US on a map or globe, or name the current president. I guessed that a lot of these people were just messing around with the interviewer, though. I hope, anyway? Sometimes I wonder. I've very occasionally come across someone who isn't familiar with the holocaust in general, but it's few and far between. I can imagine someone not knowing of particular camps, perhaps, although even that is difficult. |

I would expect it to be worse, since WWII (Europe) had less impact on the U.S. than it did on the U.K.

the holocaust was mankind in his worst hour. but it also still happens all the time to other ethnic groups besides jews. how come we never hear about them? how long are we going to let the jews play the victim game? how long are we going to piss off the muslim world by being blatantly biased towards israel?

It has a lot to say about our education systems in the last twenty some years. Students have too much freedom to choose only what interest them, and pretty much skim over those they don't. World history, for that matter, history in generally is one of the most ignored subjects because it requires them to memorize many events for the exams.
If we do not learn from the past mistakes, wonder how we are to become better tomorrow.

Now here's a topic worthy of taking seriously. I think ya said it all here Elau.
I didn't go to college, but if I had, I'd have taken all the history I could have. Instead, I do watch the History channel religously, as well as PBS, ect. The documentaries on this subject I'm sure don't even scratch the surface as to what it was really like for these people in these camps. It is very sad that they may be someday forgotten.

I think it was junior or senior year in high school that I was placed into an advanced class with a teacher who talked about history as though it were a story with context (imagine that), where there was cause and effect (in contrast to static, contextless dates and lists of battle names) and fairly human motivations driving the actions of nations. I finally got it, and saw the value of learning about history. Too bad it came so late, and too bad I wasn't bright enough to figure some of it out on my own without getting the 'right' teacher to make it clear. But, not seeing the importance of any of it before then, my attentions were just directed elsewhere. Last edited by webwench; 12-03-2004 at 11:50 AM. |

I would really like to. If I ever make it to europe, I'll be sure and make the visit.
My dad served in WWII. He spent most of it on Guam as an airplane mechanic. But he saw enough to have some good stories. And please, let's not even begin to compare these attrocities to the U.S. If anyone thinks there's any comparision at all, they need to go back and study history again. Not even in the same catagory.

I have seen Auschwitz and you come out with an undescribable feeling. First impression was that the town (Oswiecim, pronounced "oshvienchym") its located in was very dull. Its more or less a "boony" like what you would expect in the US. At the main train station there were buses that took you to the camp or you could just take a taxi. Those who visit the site will learn more about it than what the "history books" here teach.
Its shameful that such a percentage never heard of Auschwitz. Whats also shameful that the other half that did hear about the death camp think that only Jews were killed there... and the millions of non-Jews of various ethnicties are forgotten. |
