There was in internal memo sent to everyone when I worked for a securities trading company....it more or less said that there was a $2 million US EFT from a British bank but had no claimant on our end. It turns out that the money wasn't my bonus for that month

I would turn it in. What if it was drug money? Someone may see you pick up the bag and it gets back to the drug dealer. They look you up, kill you to keep you quite and get their money back.

About a month ago my wife lost her wedding ring at work. She had set it next to the sink in the bathroom at work. Got all upset when she couldn't find it that evening when she went back in.
The next day someone turned it in. It wasn't chump change, but to her it wasn't about the dollars. Me? I was already thinking upgrade!

Your all forgetting one thing here! Remember the woman who found the money promptly carried the money across the street to a bank where she assumed it had originally came from, the bank took it (stole it) from her and then rewarded her with a pat on the ass and $2 grand for being a good sport! The bank apparently revealed (to her I assume) that they were not short $40 grand, but kept the money anyway!
The story here sounds more like someones is just testing your morals here, see how many honest people there are! |

My wife, in a very uncharacteristic move, left her wallet on the top of her car as she left work the other day. Some guy tried to chase her down but couldn't catch up. When the wallet finally fell off on the interstate the guy stopped and went and got it. He called me becuase he found my # inside. There are good people around.
Then I was thinking about upgrading too. Paul X.

The ring of course! Eight year upgrade, although she seems extra attached to the one she has now all over again.

Anybody who does the "nice" thing with a bag of unindentified cash is a moron, and deserves to continue to be poor and live a Darwinian existence.
It's not like she saw it fly out of a Wells Fargo van, or pulled it from a wallet. |

But what of one’s conscience? If someone had feelings, even a sense of proper behavior, could one live with them self if they took $40,000 even if found lying on the street? Wouldn’t ones sense of right and wrong haunt like a dull stab in the ethics part of the psyche forever?

I have no problem living off some total idiot who somehow "lost" 40k in the street.
Survival of the fittest. Either they are super-stupid (and should pay for it), or super-rich and this was their spending money (then they can afford it) |

invest it while looking for the owner,,,
Take your time searching for the owner, then when you eventually find the owner give them the 40G's and keep the investment income.
Of course you could always buy some food for the kids and save the droppings to return. |

A wallet or purse I would definitely turn in with no questions asked. More than likely, the money she found was drug money or something affiliated with a shady business. I would turn in the cash to the police. More than likely, no one would come in to claim it because of its earned nature. But you never know. Morally, I wouldn't be able to sleep well without turning it in.

Aside from going to the bank to deposit the retail daily earnings (which I can't imagine being THAT careless with that amount of money), what other transaction these days requires someone to have that much cash on hand (other than a $400.000 bail)?
Bottom line is, it's probably ill-gotten cash...and I wouldn't do anything but get rid of it ASAP!
