I rented a Dodge Caravan for two months late last year, which cost about $1300 a month including the LDW. The peace of mind is worth the extra.

The LDW had to add at least $400. to the bill. A simple credit card that provides rental car coverage would have done the same thing for free. Also, although you may not realize it, your own insurance company will pay for rental car damages if you have collision on your personal vehicles..........I realize that most of us may not.

If National/Alamo decides to actually pursue this matter, and actually does collect/tries to collect from me under those false pretenses, you can be sure that my next rental will not be from them again - ever. The loss of revenue generated by my not renting from them in the future, will be greater than any perceived loss to them now.
I'll say it again: Had there been any sort of damage as described in the estimate, I would not be so irritated. However there was no such damage as described in their estimate, and therefor they are either grossly mistaken or trying to scam me out of money. (are they in financial trouble?)

Update
Checked my credit card balance today, and wondered by it wasn't $67 and change.
Looked around, and saw a charge for over $600 from National/Alamo. Obviously, ignoring them did no good. Sent them an email telling them that the damage estimate does not match the condition of the car when it was returned, and that they should find some other fool to collect money from. Also called my CC company and found out that their computers are down, but that I may be covered by them. On the one hand I am relieved to find out that they may cover this bill, but on the other hand, a scam is a scam, and my CC company shouldn't have to pay either. So, I will be joining my CC Co. in fighting National/Alamo, and their lies. PS: No, I will never, ever rent a car from these guys again.

Nice work, Hatt. I was out of town when this thread happened, but sounds like a charge-back situation to me. If it just showed up on the bill today you should ask them about a chargeback. The German corporate org. of Alamo would have to fight the chargeback here and doubtful would do it for $600.00. Had essentially the same thing happen to me in CR: car got broken into--not a scratch on it--the same key apparently fits all 4 x 4 HiLux pickups down there, but I reported it to the rental agency when I got back into San Jose. They tried to charge my card a few weeks later for replacing the locks on the truck. Did a chargeback and they didn't pursue it. |

Larry,
When I went to Germany back in '98, I rented a car from SIXT. I had made reservations for an economy class. When I got to Frankfurt, they hadn't any more economy class to give me so they upgraded me to a mid class at the same rate as economy. I was real happy with the Saab they gave me. After coming back to the U.S. I had found that they had charged my credit card for the Mid class. I disputed the charge with my cc company and also sent a letter along with a copy of my receipt to SIXT. After a couple weeks my cc was credited with the difference. Like others said, go thru your cc company. They have the muscle to set things straight. Good luck.
